Within the hour you could be threading a 276 bar gauge onto an auxiliary coupler, or kneeling beside a 450CT measuring track sag at the center rollers. This is the Case repair manual for the 450 and 465 skid steers and the 450CT compact track loader.

It covers the 445T/M2 and Tier 3 445T/M3 engines, fuel, cooling and the hydrostatic drive. Chain tanks, final drives, single arm lift and tilt, auxiliary and high-flow hydraulics, electrical, heat and A/C are in here too. Guess at a relief setting and you can score a pump. Guess at sprocket torque and the bolts back out. The 210 bar main relief and the two-stage sprocket sequence are both printed here.

You pay for it once and it's yours to keep, right there beside this machine for every repair it needs.

Case 450, 465, 450CT Common Problems This Manual Covers

Engine cranks but will not start, or stalls right after starting

Start with Engine will not start and/or run, the instrument panel electrical test under User Controls and Seat, to rule out the electrical side. If that checks good, move to the Fuel and Injection System section. Work through air in the fuel, a plugged filter, water or dirt, dirty injectors, valve clearance and the injection pump.

Manual Section: User Controls and Seat - Instrument panel electrical test; Fuel and Injection System p. 922
Hydraulic oil overheating during a long day of loading

Check the oil level, the oil condition and the airflow through the cooler before you touch any valves. Primary Hydraulic Power System has the temperature sensor test, which should read 4300 ohms at 60 °F down to 180 ohms at 212 °F. Then bring the oil to 52° C (125° F) and verify the 210 bar (3050 + 50/-72.5 psi) main relief at 10 gpm and 2200 rpm.

Manual Section: Primary Hydraulic Power System - Temperature sensor testing p. 140
Lift arms will not raise, or attachment tilt is weak or dead

Open Single Arm Lift troubleshooting for incorrect or no loader function. Confirm the oil level, then test the main relief at 21290 kPa (210 bar) at 10 gpm and 2200 rpm. The 32cc pump is rated at 88.3 L/min (23.3 US gpm) at rated rpm and 100% volumetric efficiency. A worn pump will fall short of that.

Manual Section: Single Arm Lift - Troubleshooting: incorrect or no loader function p. 1168
450CT rubber track running loose, jumping the sprocket, or sprocket bolts working loose

Rubber Track Tension Adjust calls for 12 - 19 mm (0.47 - 0.75 in), measured from the bottom of the two center rollers to the top of the track. Tighten the grease valve to 90 + 10 Nm (66 + 10 lb ft). Torque the drive sprocket bolts in a star pattern, first to 67 - 163 Nm (50 - 120 lb ft), then to 285 - 320 Nm (208 - 235 lb ft).

Manual Section: Wheels and Tracks - Rubber track tension adjust (450CT) p. 823

Frequently Asked Questions

My loader drives on one side but not the other. Where do I start?

Check the hydraulic oil level first. On a 450CT, also look for a jammed or damaged track. Then open Transmission Hydrostatic troubleshooting, which has a section for when one transmission works and the other does not. The charge pump pressure should read 26 - 28 bar (390 - 410 psi), and you adjust that relief with shims. p. 755

Does the manual list fault codes for the instrument cluster?

No. This 2008 CNH Series 3 book lays out instrument cluster diagnosis as PROBLEM / POSSIBLE CAUSE / CORRECTION lists. You work from the symptom in front of you, not a number on a display. The book also has no maintenance light reset procedure. p. 920

What oil goes in the hydraulic system and chain tanks, and how much?

Both take CASE AKCELA NO. 1 ENGINE OIL SAE 10W-30. Hydraulic capacity is 64.4 L (17 US gal) on the 450/450CT and 66.2 L (17.5 US gal) on the 465. Each chain tank holds 7.6 L (8.0 US qt). A 450CT track final drive takes 0.55 L (0.58 US qt) per side. p. 29

Does it cover the Tier 3 engine, or only the earlier 445T/M2?

It covers both the 445T/M2 and the 445T/M3 Tier 3. The 445T/M2 is listed at 4.48 L (274 cubic inch) with a 1,3,4,2 firing order. Net horsepower is 61 kW (82 hp), and rated full-load engine speed is 2300 rpm. Some shared tables also list 435, 445 and 445CT machines, so check the model column before you use a number. p. 375

Are high-flow hydraulics and the attachment coupler covered?

Yes. Distribution Systems covers Secondary and High-Flow Hydraulic Power plus the Hydraulic Command System. Tools and Couplers covers both hydraulic and mechanical coupling. Working Arm covers lift and tool attachment tilt. For the relief test, put a gauge rated at least 276 bar (4000 psi) on an auxiliary coupler, with the oil at 52° C (125° F). p. 96
