Case 450, 465, 450CT Common Problems This Manual Covers

Drive loses motion in one or both directions

Start with Transmission (Hydrostatic), which covers the M46 pump and the drive motors. Check the hydraulic oil level before anything else. On a 450CT, go through Wheels and Tracks for a jammed or damaged track before you suspect the pump. The troubleshooting charts help you tell a pump fault from a drive motor or final drive fault.

Engine will not start or run

The chart for this complaint starts on the electrical side: incorrect engine configuration in the EIC, no battery voltage to the start relay through the key switch or seat restraint bar circuits, no voltage from the EIC to the fuel solenoid, an inoperative start interlock relay or fuel solenoid, and no power to the grid heater. Check that list before you pull fuel system parts.

Temperature gauge reads wrong or the engine seems to run hot

Test the sender before you chase a cooling fault. With the connector off, measure resistance from the coolant temperature sensor terminal to the machine frame. It should read between 4300 ohms at 60 °F and 180 ohms at 212 °F, and outside that range the sensor is bad. When you refill, use a 50% engine coolant and 50% water mix up to the top of the radiator fill neck.

Battery goes flat or won't take a charge

Test the battery before you replace it. Check the specific gravity of each cell with a hydrometer and allow for electrolyte temperature. Before charging, check the electrolyte level and never charge a frozen battery. Decrease the charging rate if gas pushes electrolyte out of the cells or it rises above 52 °C (125 °F). For a slow crank, the starter test has you check both battery cables and the ground to the loader chassis.

Frequently Asked Questions

My 450 cranks but won't start, or it starts and then dies. Where do I start?

Start with the troubleshooting chart on page 830. If the engine turns over but will not start, it points to power at the fuel solenoid: check the 7.5 amp fuse in the cab fuse block and the interlock fuel solenoid relay, and if the machine has an auxiliary override switch, make sure it is in neutral. Incorrect engine configuration in the EIC and a dead grid heater circuit are on the same list. p. 830

Does one manual really cover both the wheeled 450/465 and the 450CT track loader?

Yes. All three share the engine and the M46 hydrostatic pump family, and pilot-control machines add a Bosch-Rexroth A22. The drive side is different. The 450 and 465 use Rexroth MCR05 radial piston motors into a chain case. The 450CT uses Rexroth GRM8 motors with a 3.66:1 planetary reduction turning sprockets and idlers. The loader overheats after an hour of work. Is it the engine or the hydraulics?

It can be either one, and the book covers both. Engine Coolant System handles the cooling side. Primary Hydraulic Power covers the hydraulic circuit and relief pressure. Check coolant, engine oil and hydraulic fluid first, then blow out the cooling package. If the relief is set wrong, oil can run over relief all day and heat up fast.

Can I read or clear fault codes on the instrument cluster with this book?

This book doesn't work from numeric fault codes. The instrument cluster (EIC) is diagnosed with problem, possible cause and correction charts on pages 829-831, covering an EIC that won't read engine RPM, won't unlock the boom and bucket spool locks or won't read monitored circuits. For a no-crank, the start relay test gives the expected voltage at each terminal. p. 830

What fluid goes in the chain case, and what goes in the 450CT final drives?

On the 450 and 465, each chain compartment takes 7.6 L of CASE AKCELA No.1 Engine Oil 10W-30. On the 450CT, each final drive takes only 0.55 L of CASE AKCELA GEAR LUBE SSL 75W-90. Don't mix them up. Gear lube doesn't belong in a chain case, and engine oil doesn't belong in a planetary hub. p. 756
