The hitch sags with the mower lifted, or the 385 cranks and cranks while the hay is ready to bale. This is the Case factory service manual for the 85 Series tractors. It comes as separate sections: engine, Bosch VE and VA injection pumps, electrical, steering, power train, brakes, hydraulics and the XL cab.
Most jobs stall for want of one number, like the steering relief pressure or the hot valve clearance. Those numbers are in here. Section 8001 adds a full hydraulic schematic with 13 numbered test points. There are also wiring diagrams for the charging, lighting and powershift circuits.
The spec tables cover the 385 and 485, not the 395 or 495. Find the fault, set it to spec, and have the tractor pulling again before the weather turns.

Case 385, 485, 395, 495 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Hitch lifts slowly or will not hold a mounted implement up
Check the fluid level and change the hydraulic filter first, using the Filter and Pump section. If the hitch is still weak, run the Full Pump Efficiency and Main Relief Valve test in Section 8001. Divide the flow at 2000 psi by the flow at 0 psi. A result under 80% means a worn pump. If the pump passes, go to Hitch Adjustments and Draft Cylinder and Rockshaft.

Clean and tighten the battery terminals and cables, then test the battery as shown in Battery Servicing and Testing. Trace the charging and starting circuit on the wiring diagrams, including the alternator warning lamp. If the fault is in a unit rather than the wiring, go to the Alternators and Regulators or Starter Motors section.

Follow the Powershift Check in Section 8001. Check the voltage at the solenoid, then the powershift regulator pressure, then the powershift pressure in low. The two speed power shift circuit is on the wiring diagrams. If the voltage is good but the pressure is not, go to the Power Shift Transmission section in Power Train.

Run the PTO/Cooler Check in Section 8001. It measures cooler inlet flow and pressure, PTO regulated pressure, and flow at the steering/regulator return line and MCV supply port. If the pressures are good and the shaft still slips, go to the PTO Clutch section. On a 385 at 2200 r/min, the upper shaft should turn 614 r/min and the lower 1004.

Why won't my Case 385 or 485 start after it has been sitting?
Check the simple things first. Make sure the stop control lever is fully open, the air filter is clean and the battery turns the engine over fast enough. Then look for air in the fuel system, blocked fuel lines or filters, and a faulty thermostart unit. What steering pressure should a 385 or 485 show?
The steering check in Section 8001 gives 750 to 1000 psi (51 to 68.9 bar) with the engine stopped. With the engine running it should read 2050 to 2150 psi (141 to 148 bar). Heavy or slow steering usually starts with a reading outside those ranges. If you pull the steering hand pump, torque the retaining capscrews to 33 to 37 lb ft (45 to 51 Nm) on refit. p. 1862
The MFD front drive will not engage or will not disengage. Where do I start?
Work through the MFD Check in Section 8001 in the order it is printed. Check the voltage at the solenoid, then the solenoid ground, then test the MFD pressure. A bad ground costs nothing to fix and is easy to miss. If the wiring and pressure are good, the MFD Front Axles and Transfer Gearbox section covers the mechanical side. p. 1867
What oil pressure and oil capacity does the 385 and 485 engine need?
Oil pressure should sit between 40 and 60 psi (275 to 414 kPa). The crankcase holds 7.5 litres including the filter, which is 13.2 UK pints or 8 US quarts. Both are three cylinder diesels with a 1-3-2 firing order. The 385 has the D 155 engine and the 485 has the D 179. p. 10
Does the manual list specs for the 395 and 495?
No. The contents page names the 395 and 495, but General Specifications only prints tables for the 385, 485, 585, 685 and 885. For the 385 and 485, hot valve clearance is 0.012 in (0.30 mm) for inlet and exhaust. Static timing is 10 degrees BTDC on the 385 and 14 on the 485. Do not assume those figures carry over to a 395 or 495. p. 10
