When a 1838 Uni-Loader drops hydraulic power or drags on one drive side, this Case 1838 service manual PDF (OEM Rac 7-61690) puts 492 pages of factory repair data behind your diagnosis. Hydraulic schematics trace oil from the gear pump through the loader, auxiliary and self-leveling control valves, while hydrostatic troubleshooting charts link pressure symptoms back to the piston pumps and drive motors. Electrical schematics, the complete Kubota V2203 workshop section, and removal procedures for sprockets, chains, axle housings and the D100 backhoe round out the coverage. Set vee belt deflection to 10 to 12 mm at 22 pounds of force, then run half inch Grade 5 hardware to 80 to 96 pound feet. Guessing at a drive motor buys you a second teardown. Download the bookmarked, keyword searchable file and make the first repair the last one.

Case 1838 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Case 1838 diesel hard starting, needs repeated fuel system bleeding, runs rough after startup

Check every suction line fitting from tank to transfer pump for air leaks before condemning the injection pump. Bleed the system following the fuel system procedures starting on page 111, then crank until fuel runs clear at the injectors. Verify injector pop pressure at 3250 to 3400 psi (22.41 to 23.44 MPa) before reinstalling.

Manual Section: Fuel System p. 111
No crank or intermittent crank with key turned, solenoid clicks, battery fully charged

Test the key switch, starter relay, and solenoid circuit using the wiring diagram on page 139 before pulling the starter. Load test the battery first. If the starter comes out, measure brush length against the 15.0 mm specification and check commutator outside diameter against the 35 mm limit on page 67.

Manual Section: Electrical p. 119
Engine overheats under load, coolant loss, temperature gauge climbs during long bucket cycles

Check fan belt tension first; deflection should be 10 to 12 mm at 22 lbs (98 N) of force per page 66. Clean the radiator core and screen. If the water pump is suspect, pull it and measure impeller to body clearance; anything outside 0.4 to 0.5 mm (0.016 to 0.020 in.) on page 64 means replace the pump.

Manual Section: Engine p. 64
Drive motors lose power on one side, machine pulls or creeps under load

Test charge pressure first; the spec on page 169 is 130 to 150 PSI (9.0 to 10.3 bar) with oil at operating temperature. Low charge pressure starves the piston pumps and mimics worn drive motors. Check circuit relief valves next, swapping them side to side to see if the weak side follows the valve.

Manual Section: Power Train p. 169
Lift arms slow or bucket cylinders drift down under load with engine warm

Verify loader main relief valve pressure against the 2400 to 2600 psi spec on page 275 with oil hot. If pressure checks good but the arms still crawl, run the equipment pump efficiency test on page 282; below 75 percent efficiency the gear pump is done. Check quick coupler O-rings for internal bypass before buying parts.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System Troubleshooting p. 282

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the torque specification for the wheel nuts on the Case 1838?

The wheel nut torque specification for the Case 1838 is 115 to 125 pound-feet (156 to 170 Nm). If you remove and install a wheel, check the wheel nut torque after every two hours of operation until the wheel nuts stay tight. p. 244
