Rebuilding the hydraulic power shuttle, down to its forward and reverse clutches, is one of the jobs inside this 593-page Case W3 service manual PDF, OEM ID 9-70451, written for the W3 and W5 wheel tractor loaders. Wiring diagrams trace the electrical circuits, and hydraulic schematics map the loader hydraulic system, the backhoe control valve and the hydraulic cylinders. Engine chapters handle cylinder head work, ignition timing and diesel injection pump timing, while the drivetrain sections follow the four speed transmission, dual range and shuttle assemblies through to the differential brakes and final drive gears. Fill the W3 transmission Case with 17 quarts. Torque the converter filter housing cap screws to 20 ft. lbs. When your job is splitting the tractor at the front of the transmission, the sequence begins with removing the loader and backhoe. Bookmarks take you straight to each section, and every page prints cleanly as a working copy.

Case W3, W5 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Gasoline engine radiator, water pump, fan belt, or thermostat fault and engine overheats

Check water level and clean the radiator core from the engine side; clean or replace a clogged radiator. Inspect the radiator and water pump for leaks and repair or replace. Adjust the fan belt to 3/4 inch deflection as listed on page 80, and replace damaged hoses or belt. Replace an inoperative thermostat or radiator cap, and tighten or replace a leaking head gasket per the chart on page 118.

Manual Section: Gasoline Engine Troubleshooting p. 118
Torque tube reservoir topped off during filter service and torque converter drive now feels sluggish

Check the torque tube oil level and correct it to the full mark on the dipstick; overfilling makes the tractor sluggish, as page 15 notes. Replace the torque converter drive filter elements and torque the filter housing cap screws to 20 ft. lbs. per page 271. Never run the engine with oil removed from the torque tube reservoir, because the hydraulic pump can be damaged in seconds (page 15).

Manual Section: Torque Converter Trouble Shooting p. 15
Gasoline engine battery, cables, or starting switch fault and starting motor will not turn engine over

Charge or replace a discharged battery, then remove and clean loose or corroded battery terminals and ground cables, working down the chart on page 113. Replace the starting switch if contact is poor. If the starter drive gear is jammed in the flywheel, remove the starting motor; a faulty motor goes out for service. If a cylinder is full of water, check the head gasket, head, and block.

Manual Section: Gasoline Engine Troubleshooting p. 113
Loader lift cylinder removal and reassembly when lift arms show cylinder creep

Remove the lift cylinder only after blocking or supporting it so it cannot drop and cause serious injury or damage when the pivot pins come out, as page 574 warns. On a tie rod lift cylinder, tighten the nuts evenly in 10 ft. lbs. increments until 90 ft. lbs. is reached, and tighten the nut to 200 ft. lbs., following page 411.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I troubleshoot a Case W3 that will not crank?

If the starting motor will not turn the engine over, check if the battery is discharged, battery terminals or ground cables are loose or corroded, the starting motor is faulty, the starter drive gear is jammed in the flywheel, the piston is locked in the engine cylinder, or the starting switch contact is poor. Refer to page 113 for the complete troubleshooting chart. p. 113

How do I troubleshoot Case W3 hydraulic lift problems?

If the lift arms will not raise, check for excessive bucket resistance, low hydraulic oil level, plugged hydraulic lines or connections, damaged or disconnected lines, worn or damaged oil pump parts, or a malfunctioning pressure relief valve. Refer to page 566 for detailed diagnostic steps and remedies. p. 566

How do you fix case W3 W5 power steering pump relief valve check shows pressure below 1050 PSI?

Check relief valve pressure following page 466. As the pressure drops off, do not keep holding the tire against the wall, because that can damage the relief valve. If the reading is under 1050 PSI, add one or more 1/32 inch washers behind the relief valve spring to reach 1050 to 1150 PSI. If one or two washers do not raise pressure, the pump is worn and must be replaced complete. p. 466

How do you fix diesel fuel filter plugged or partially plugged, engine lacks power from insufficient fuel reaching pump?

Replace the fuel filter and keep every contaminant out, since dirt passes straight into the fuel pump (page 135). Keep smoking and open flames away, and catch drained fuel in a metal container (page 132). Tighten the two top assembly capscrews to 13-17 ft. lbs. per page 136. Bleed the system with the engine stopped and never open the vent screw while it runs (page 133). p. 133

Is this Case W3 Service Manual a digital download?

You get a 593-page searchable PDF that downloads instantly after checkout. Open it on your laptop, tablet, or phone, and bring it right to the shop floor.

Can I print just the pages I need from this Case W3 manual?

You can. Print the sections you want for your own use and keep the file as your backup.

Does this Case W3 manual have electrical schematics?
