Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
Fill capacities, fluid types and the full engine removal and installation sequence for the Case CPX420 Cotton Express 420 are all set down in this book. With a filter change the engine takes 22 U.S. quarts of CASE No. 1 Engine Oil. The engine mounting bolts torque to 100 lb. ft. (136 Nm).
Hydrostatic drive pump service and rear drive axle service are covered step by step. Battery testing, fuse/relay identification and wiring harness connector checks sit in the electrical chapters. Steering runs from the hand pump and cylinder through the automatic steering guidance system, and the electrical and hydraulic schematics are at the back.
You buy it once and keep it for as long as this picker stays in your shed.

Case CPX420 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Engine temperature climbs under load or coolant keeps disappearing
Check the coolant level against the 35 U.S. quart (33.1 L) capacity. Top up with a 50 percent mix of water and ethylene glycol. Use heavy duty low silicate coolant only, never automotive antifreeze. The water temperature switch closes at 113 C (235 F), and that circuit can be tested with Basic Electrical System Testing.
Manual Section: General / Engine / Electrical System p. 23Hydraulic functions turn slow, erratic or quit
Before you change the oil and filters, park on level ground and lower the basket and picker drums. Stop the engine and pull the keys. Refill with CASE HY-TRAN ULTRA to the 18 gallon (68 L) system capacity. Check the inline filter debris for the contamination source, then trace the pressures on the Hydraulic Schematic.
Manual Section: Hydraulics / Hydraulic Schematic p. 629Displays or machine functions cut in and out
Start with Battery Servicing and Testing so you know the supply voltage is good. Then use Fuse/Relay Identification to find the protecting circuit. Go through the Wiring Harness Connectors pages for loose or corroded pins and bad grounds. Follow the feed through the Power Distribution System and the electrical schematics.
Manual Section: Electrical System / Electrical Schematic p. 57Engine has to come out for major repair
Engine Removal lists the recommended tools first and then walks through the removal in order, and Engine Installation puts it back. Torque the engine mounting bolts to 100 lb. ft. (136 Nm) at reassembly. For internal engine work the book refers you to the separate Engine Repair Manual.
Manual Section: Engine: Engine Removal / Engine Installation p. 44Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reset fault codes on a Case CPX420 Cotton Express?
The manual has no numbered fault code list, so there is no code chart to look up. It does cover the operator presence reset. Drum rotation will not start again until the propulsion lever is cycled through neutral. If controls drop out, the Electrical System section covers basic circuit testing, fuse/relay identification and harness connector checks. p. 134
Do I need to reset the auto steering controller after replacing a steering valve?
Yes, in that case you do. The factory sets valve bias, and it should not need resetting during normal service. The two exceptions are a replaced steering valve and a system moved to a different machine. The Automatic Steering Guidance System section gives the valve bias setting procedure for both. p. 203
How do I diagnose slow or dead hydraulics on a Case 420 Cotton Express?
Check the fluid first. The reservoir holds 10 U.S. gallons (38 L), and the whole system holds 18 gallons (68 L) of CASE HY-TRAN ULTRA. At full swash plate tilt the piston pump puts out about 100 L/min (27 GPM). Look through any debris caught in the inline filter to find where the contamination came from. p. 23
What are the engine and drivetrain specs for the Cotton Express 420?
The engine mounting bolts torque to 100 lb. ft. (136 Nm). Engine oil is 20 U.S. quarts (19 L) without a filter change and 22 quarts (21 L) with one. The transmission takes 15 quarts (14 L) and the final drive 7.5 quarts (7.3 L), both CASE HY-TRAN ULTRA. p. 23
How do I correct picking drum height on a CPX420?
Drum height is set by lock collars on the lower linkage rods. Slide the collars higher on the rods to raise the drums. If a unit still drifts or lifts on its own, look for hydraulic leaks. Then check control pressures against the Hydraulics section and the hydraulic schematic. p. 581
