The Case N843 and N844 series service manual PDF (OEM 47632257) takes all seven variants of this diesel engine family from compression test through final assembly across 316 pages. Wiring diagrams for the starting circuit, alternator, cold start aid, and injection controls fill roughly the last third of the book. Ahead of that electrical section, teardown procedures work through cylinder heads, rods and pistons, crankshaft and flywheel, and balancer backlash adjustment, each closing with inspection limits you can measure against. Check main bearing clearance to the 0.035 to 0.083 mm standard before ordering shells, then run the head bolts down to 98 to 103 N·m in the printed sequence. Guess at a journal and you pay for the teardown twice. Print the chapter that matches what is on the stand, let those pages take the oil, and keep the bookmarked, text searchable master clean for the next rebuild.

Case N843 and N844 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers

Case N844 engine cranks but won't start, no fuel at injectors after filter change

Check fuel reaches the injection pump before condemning it; bleed air at the filter and lines. Crack injector lines while cranking to verify delivery to each cylinder. Pop test each injector at the 14824 kPa (2150 psi) opening pressure listed on page 143, watch the spray pattern, then reinstall and torque injectors to 60 - 69 N·m per page 161.

Manual Section: Fuel Injection System Troubleshooting
Low compression on one cylinder, rough idle and white smoke at operating temperature

Run a compression test on all cylinders with the engine warm and compare readings. Set valve clearance to 0.2 mm cold per page 51 before testing. If one cylinder stays low, pull the head, inspect valves and seats, then reinstall with head bolts torqued to 98 - 103 N·m per the chart on page 16.

Manual Section: Engine and Crankcase p. 27
Heavy oil consumption and blue smoke after rebuild, oil wet at exhaust outlet

Measure ring end gap with each ring squared in its bore; replace the set if the first ring exceeds 1.0 mm (0.039 in) per page 153. Check piston to bore clearance against the 0.038 - 0.072 mm standard on page 88, and inspect valve guides and seals before blaming the rings alone.

Manual Section: Connecting Rods and Pistons p. 85
Deep bottom end knock under load, oil pressure light flickers at hot idle

Drop the pan and plastigauge the main bearings, torquing holder bolts to 49.0 - 53.9 N·m per page 120. Replace bearings if oil clearance exceeds the 0.2 mm (0.0078 in) limit on page 116. Measure journals against the 67.957 - 67.97 mm standard on page 106; regrind or replace a worn crankshaft.

Manual Section: Crankshaft and Flywheel p. 103
Starter spins but engine won't turn over, or cranks slowly with a charged battery

Test battery voltage under load before pulling the starter, then clean and tighten the ground cable at the block. Inspect the pinion and ring gear teeth for wear or chipped edges. If the battery keeps running down between starts, check charging output; the alternator should deliver 30 A minimum at 2500 RPM per page 259.

Manual Section: Electrical Systems p. 221
