Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
A hydrostatic tractor that jerks in gear, or drives one direction only, can stall a whole planting week while you guess at charge pressure. The fix starts with this Case 235 service manual PDF: 383 pages, OEM 8-92560, factory coverage for ten variants across the 235 and MT160/MT180 families. Wiring diagrams trace the starter, alternator and regulator circuits, while hydraulic schematics map the lift circuit from the oil pump out to the three-point hitch. Roughly a third of the book covers the hydrostatic transmission: pressure testing, symptom-keyed troubleshooting, and full teardown of the charge pump and rotating assemblies. Relining the clutch? Replace the disc once the lining wears past 7.8 mm (5/16 in.), and bench the glow plugs at their 10.5 volt rating. One invented charge pressure figure can cook that pump. Your copy is text searchable, bookmarked by system, and prints clean, so the pages can sit on the bench and take grease while the weather holds.

Case 235, 235H and MT160/MT180 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers
Case 235 hydrostatic transmission will not drive in either direction, pedal moves but tractor stays put
Check transmission oil level before anything else; the rear frame and transmission hold 14.8 quarts (14.0 litres) of hydraulic fluid. Work through the Tractor Will Not Drive chart starting on page 240, then run the charge pressure test beginning on page 226. Low charge pressure points to the charge pump, not the rotating group.
Manual Section: Troubleshooting Hydrostatic Transmission p. 240Engine cranks slowly and needs a long preheat to start after sitting a few days
Test battery specific gravity with a hydrometer and adjust electrolyte to 1.260 ± 0.010 at 20°C, page 102. Load test the battery and starter circuit, then check each glow plug; resistance should read 0.16 ohm cold, page 88. Hunt for a parasitic draw from the radio or monitor if the tractor sits between jobs.
Manual Section: Electrical p. 102Clutch grabs hard on takeoff and the pedal engagement point sits near the floor
Adjust clutch pedal free play to 20 to 30 mm (0.79 to 1.18 in.), page 195, and confirm effective stroke of 60 to 75 mm. If engagement stays harsh, split the tractor and inspect the disc; new lining thickness is 7.8 mm (5/16 in.), page 198. Replace any glazed or oil soaked disc.
Manual Section: Clutch System p. 195Three point hitch lifts slowly with a mounted implement and hunts in neutral
Check hydraulic oil level and the suction screen before condemning the pump. Test the relief valve; it should be set at 135 kg/cm², page 382, and the pump should deliver 12.9 liter/min (3.4 GPM) at rated speed. If output is low, measure pump casing wear against the 0.05 mm (0.002 in.) limit on page 373.
Manual Section: Hydraulics p. 382Brakes pull to one side and pedal travel keeps getting longer between adjustments
Set brake pedal free play to 20 to 30 mm on both pedals, page 344, then equalize the rods so both sides bite together. If travel keeps growing, pull the covers and inspect linings and cam faces for wear or oil, following the disassembly procedure that starts on page 334. Fix any leaking seal before reassembly.
Manual Section: Brakes p. 344Frequently Asked Questions
What are the replacement battery specifications for the Case 235, MT160, and MT180 series tractors?
The standard battery for the 235 tractor is the Polymion perfector type, model NX100-S6L (S). It is a 12-volt battery with a capacity of 45 ampere-hours. p. 94
What is the replacement fuse spec for Case 235, 235H, 235-4WD, 235H-4WD, MT160, MT160D, MT180, MT180D, MT180H, MT180HD?
The tractor uses a 15-ampere fuse located in a cylindrical holder below the dash panel. Do not attempt to use a fuse of any other amperage. p. 106
What is the cylinder head bolt tightening torque for the Case 235, 235H, 235-4WD, 235H-4WD, MT160, MT160D, MT180 series?

The valve clearance for both intake and exhaust valves is 0.25 mm (0.0098 in.) when the engine is cold. p. 81
What is the engine oil capacity for the 235 tractor?
The engine oil capacity is 3.0 liters (0.79 gal) for the upper limit and 1.8 liters (0.48 gal) for the lower limit, excluding the 0.5 liters (0.13 gal) in the oil filter. p. 85
