Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
Forks creep down under load, the mast lifts slowly, or the shuttle won't pick up reverse. On a Case 584E, 585E or 586E, each of those starts with the right pressure and the right fluid. This factory service manual gives you both.
It covers the 4-cylinder diesel, injection pump and injectors, power shuttle, four speed transaxle, transfer gear box, brakes, steering, hydraulics and the mast. Relief settings are written out: 2100 to 2290 psi for the main relief and 2050 to 2150 psi for steering. If you guess at a pressure or a head bolt torque, you pay for it in blown seals or a warped head.
The General section lists the product identification numbers. Match your serial before you call the dealer, so the part that shows up fits the first time.

Case 584E/585E/586E Common Problems This Manual Covers
Mast lifts slowly or forks drift down with a load on
Put a flow meter on the pump first and look for 24.9 gpm at 2000 psi and 2000 rpm. Then check the main relief against 2100 to 2290 psi at full throttle. If both are good, move to the Cylinders procedures and reseal the lift or tilt cylinder that is leaking past.
Manual Section: Hydraulics - Pump Flow Control, Control Valve and Levers, Cylinders p. 819Steering goes heavy or slow, especially at idle
The steering relief is in the flow control valve and should read 2050 to 2150 psi at full throttle. If pressure is correct, the Steering section covers testing and rebuilding the steering control valve and the steering cylinder on the rear axle.
Manual Section: Steering - Steering Control Valve, Cylinder, Rear Axle p. 333Power shuttle slips, engages late or won't pick up a direction
Start with the fluid. The shuttle holds 8 U.S. quarts of Case TCH Fluid, and low or wrong fluid causes most slipping. After that, work through the Power Shuttle Controls linkage and the shuttle overhaul procedures in the Power Train section before you pull the transaxle.
Manual Section: Power Train - Power Shuttle, Power Shuttle Controls p. 562Hard starting, smoke or loss of power under load
Check that the lift pump delivers 5 to 7 PSI, then change the fuel filters. Pop test the injectors against the 3190 to 3310 PSI opening pressure for new Bosch 17 mm units. Confirm the injection pump is timed to Top Center using the Fuel System section.
Manual Section: Fuel System - Fuel Injection Pump, Injectors, Fuel Filters p. 226Frequently Asked Questions
What are the hydraulic and steering relief pressure settings on the 584E/585E/586E?
The main relief is 2100 to 2290 psi at full throttle. The steering relief sits in the flow control valve and is set to 2050 to 2150 psi at full throttle. Pump output should be 24.9 U.S. gpm at 2000 psi and 2000 rpm. Check flow before you turn any relief screw. p. 819
What fluid goes in the hydraulic tank and the power shuttle, and how much?
Both take Case TCH Fluid. The hydraulic reservoir takes 13.6 U.S. gallons with a filter change and 13.3 gallons without one. Total system capacity is 15.25 gallons. The power shuttle holds 8 U.S. quarts. p. 14
What is the valve lash and firing order on the diesel?
Set the valves cold: 0.254 mm on the intake and 0.508 mm on the exhaust. The firing order is 1, 3, 4, 2. The engine is a 3.92 litre four with a 102 mm bore, a 120 mm stroke and 17.0 to 1 compression. p. 18
What should the injectors pop at, and what does the lift pump need to make?
New Bosch 17 mm injectors open at 3190 to 3310 PSI (220 to 228 bar). The lift pump should deliver 5 to 7 PSI. Pump timing is Top Center. The Fuel System section covers pump removal, the injectors and the filters. p. 18
Does it include wiring and hydraulic schematics?
Yes. The Electrical section refers to the schematic that sits in the pocket inside the rear cover. In this PDF that is page 1180. Hydraulic schematics appear at page 820 in the Hydraulics section and again at page 1181. p. 1180
