The Case 4890 service manual gives the factory numbers for the 674 cubic inch turbo six, the RPS-34 power shift, the selective rear steering and the remote hydraulics. Valve lash, pump timing, relief pressures and fill capacities all sit in one binder, written by the people who built the tractor.

A 4WD articulated tractor parked in the shed at planting time costs acres every day. Guessing at a steering valve pressure or a power shift clutch only drags that out.

The book covers engine teardown, fuel injection, wiring diagrams, axles and planetaries, the hitch, air conditioning and the tilting hood. Work through the right section and the 4890 is pulling again before the weather turns.

Case 4890 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Rear steering will not respond to the cab control

Start with the Solid State Selective Steering section. Then trace the circuit on the steering system electrical wiring diagram on page 621. If the wiring checks out, test the rear steering valve against its 1650 to 1900 PSI relief setting. The steering schematic on page 1533 shows where the oil should be going.

Manual Section: Steering - Solid State Selective Steering / Rear Steering Valve p. 587
Power shift slips or hangs up in a range under load

Check the oil level and type first. The RPS-34 runs on Case TFD: 44 quarts with PTO, 40 without. The RPS-34 Power Shift Transmission section covers the hydraulically actuated clutches and the mechanical shifter. Rule out the torque limiter clutch before you pull the transmission.

Manual Section: Power Train - RPS-34 Power Shift Transmission / Torque Limiter Clutch p. 786
Hitch lifts slowly or remote cylinders feel weak

Change the hydraulic oil filters first, then confirm the charge circuit relief is holding 35 PSI. Use the Hydraulic Pump section to check that the axial piston pump makes 31 GPM at 2000 PSI. The neutral mode schematic on page 1537 helps you tell a pump problem from a valve problem.

Manual Section: Hydraulics - Hydraulic Oil Filters / Hydraulic Pump / Hitch System p. 1174
Slow cranking or batteries keep going flat

The Battery Servicing section covers the two 12 volt Group 30H batteries wired in parallel. One weak battery will drag the good one down. Next, test the 72 ampere alternator using the Alternator System section, and check the dual 50 ampere circuit breakers. Starting Motors covers the starter itself.

Manual Section: Electrical - Battery Servicing / Alternator System / Starting Motors p. 406

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the cylinder head bolts need a re-torque after a head gasket job?

Yes. After one hour of run-in, re-torque the 16 mm head bolts to 177 ft lbs (240 Nm) with the engine hot. Page 162 covers it. On a wet sleeve engine, skipping this step can let the new gasket leak. p. 162

Are there wiring diagrams for the selective steering and the tractor harness?

Yes. The harness wiring diagrams are on pages 521 and 531, and the steering system electrical diagram is on page 621. How It Works adds hydraulic schematics for the steering and for the hydraulic system in neutral. The 4890 has no fault code system, so you find electrical faults with these diagrams and a test light. p. 621

What are the valve lash settings and firing order on the 4890 engine?

Set the intake valves at 0.014 inch (0.35 mm) and the exhaust valves at 0.031 inch (0.80 mm). The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. The Tune-Up section covers the adjustment, and injection pump timing is 20 degrees before top center. p. 9

How much oil and coolant does each system hold?

Engine oil is 28.4 quarts and the cooling system is 44 quarts. The power shift takes Case TFD: 44 quarts with PTO, 40 without. Each differential holds 21 quarts and each planetary holds 9.5 quarts. p. 10

What pump output and PTO speed should a healthy 4890 deliver?

The remote hydraulics run on an axial piston pump rated at 31 GPM at 2000 PSI with the engine at 2200 RPM. Maximum system pressure is 2250 PSI. The PTO shaft turns 1000 RPM at 2200 engine RPM on a 20 spline, 1-3/4 inch shaft. p. 14
