The 2090 and 2290 are Case's heavy six-cylinder workhorses, and after decades in the field they earn their keep only if you can keep the hydraulics, the power train and the fuel system honest. This is the real factory service manual, part 8-20000R0, 1,755 pages covering the six-cylinder diesel (naturally aspirated on the 2090, turbocharged on the 2290), fuel, electrical, steering, power train, brakes, hydraulics and accessories, plus a How It Works theory section. Whether you are chasing weak hydraulics, a starter that will not engage, or an engine that fades under load, it is here in factory order with the capacities, speeds and torque values to work to.

Case 2090, 2290 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Insufficient or erratic hydraulic system oil flow

Weak or erratic flow usually traces to a worn hydraulic pump or a clogged hydraulic filter. Change the filter and check the fluid level and condition against the system capacity, then run the flow test and check pump output against spec before replacing the pump. The hydraulic section gives the flow values and pump service.

Manual Section: Hydraulic
Starting system does not engage the starter motor

A no crank usually points to a faulty starter solenoid or a degraded starter motor, though it starts with the battery and cables. Check battery voltage and the connections, test the solenoid and the starter draw, and confirm the safety start switch. The electrical section covers the starting circuit and the tests.

Manual Section: Electrical
Engine will not maintain power under load

Power loss under load is most often fuel delivery or an air intake restriction. Change the fuel filters and check supply and injection pump delivery, then inspect the air cleaner and, on the 2290, the turbocharger and boost. The fuel system and engine sections cover the injection pump service and the speed settings.
