Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
Case Solid State Selective Steering is the system that scares people off a 4490 or 4690. It gets real coverage here: How It Works theory, testing procedures, the steering system wiring diagram, and the column, pump, valve and cylinder work behind it.
From there the manual covers the rest of the articulated tractor. That includes the 504BDT turbo diesel down to wet sleeves and main bearings, Robert Bosch injection, the RPS-34 power shift, PTO, axles and planetaries. Brakes, the hitch, remote hydraulics and cab air are in here too.
Nothing stalls a job like a cylinder head sitting on the bench with no torque figure. The 210 ft. lbs. and the tightening sequence are both in here. Buy it once and it stays with this tractor, ready when the field is waiting.

Case 4490/4690 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Rear steering will not respond or holds only one mode on the selective steering system
Start with the testing procedure in the Steering section, then trace the circuit on the steering system electrical wiring diagram. Check the wheel sensors and control box connections before touching hydraulics. After that, move to the steering valve, priority valves and check valves covered in the same section.
Manual Section: Steering - Solid State Selective Steering, Electronic Steering, Testing p. 695Hitch lifts slowly or will not hold, and the remote hydraulics feel weak
Work through the Hydraulics testing procedures before you pull any parts, so you know whether it is the pump or a valve. Then check the oil filters, pump, flow divider and remote valves in order. The Electronic Hitch pages cover the control side if the hydraulics check out.
Manual Section: Hydraulics - Hitch System, Electronic Hitch, Testing p. 1344Engine runs hot under heavy drawbar load
Check the specs first. The thermostats should start to open near 175°F and be fully open at 202°F. The system takes a 10 PSI pressure cap and holds 48 quarts. The Engines section covers thermostat testing, cooling system service and turbocharger and air induction checks for a restricted or overworked engine.
Manual Section: Engines - Cooling, Turbocharger, Air Induction p. 103RPS-34 power shift is slow to engage or shifts harshly between gears
Check oil level and filters first, then work through the control valve and linkage pages in the Power Train section. Linkage adjustment fixes more of these than people expect. If pressures and linkage are right, the same section covers the transmission teardown, the four speed transmission and the drive shafts.
Manual Section: Power Train - RPS-34 Power Shift Transmission, Control Valve, Linkage p. 958Frequently Asked Questions
What is the valve lash on the 504BDT engine in the 4490 and 4690?
Set intake rocker arm-to-valve clearance at 0.015 inch (0.381 mm) and exhaust at 0.025 inch (0.635 mm). Firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4, so you can work through the cylinders in order as you roll the engine over. The Engines section tune-up pages walk through the procedure. p. 7
What is the cylinder head bolt torque on the Case 4490/4690, and is there a tightening sequence?
The head bolts go to 210 ft. lbs. (285 Nm). The manual prints the tightening sequence with that figure, so you are not guessing at the pattern on a six-cylinder head. Follow the sequence in steps rather than taking any one bolt to full torque first. p. 242
Does it help with the electronic rear steering, or is it just hydraulics?
It covers both sides. There is a dedicated steering system electrical wiring diagram, plus testing procedures for the Solid State Selective Steering and the wheel sensors. This era has no fault code readout. Diagnosis is done with a meter and the test steps, and the manual gives you those. p. 728
What is different between the 4490 and the 4690 in this manual?
Both run the six-cylinder turbocharged 504BDT layout, but the 4690 adds an intercooler. The specs are listed separately for each model. Much of it matches: Robert Bosch Type PES pump timed at 25 degrees BTC, two 64-gallon fuel tanks and 48 quarts of coolant. p. 31
How much oil does the Case 4490/4690 engine take, and what oil pressure should I see?
The 504BDT holds 28 U.S. quarts with filters and 24 without. Oil pressure should read 45 to 60 PSI. Rated speed is 2200 RPM, with high idle at 2340 to 2380 and low idle at 725 to 775. That gives you a baseline before you chase a problem. p. 7
