Ford 2120, AV413A, AV413P Common Problems This Manual Covers

Ford 2120 engine cranks slowly and will not start on cold mornings

Check battery terminals for corrosion and loose connections before condemning the starter. Clean and tighten both clamps, then verify electrolyte level in each cell. Follow the cold starting procedure in the Operation section on page 16, and add terminal cleaning to every 50 hour service on the maintenance chart, page 32.

Manual Section: Operation p. 16
Three-point hitch lifts slowly and hydraulic implements barely respond at working engine speed

Check the hydraulic oil level with the tractor on level ground and all cylinders retracted. Top up if low, then replace the spin-on hydraulic filter; the interval on page 39 calls for a change after the first 50 hours and every 300 hours after that. Old filters starve the pump slowly.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System Oil Filter Replacement p. 39
Oil pressure warning light stays on after the engine starts and warms up

Check the oil level on the dipstick as soon as you shut the engine down, and top up before restarting. Match the light to the engine oil pressure symbol shown on page 5. Change the engine oil every 100 hours and the oil filter every 200 hours, both intervals listed on page 37.

Manual Section: Lubrication and Maintenance p. 37
Rear wheel wobbles at road speed and wheel bolts keep working loose

Torque the rear wheel disc-to-rim hardware to 137-159 lbs. ft. (186-215 N.m) as listed in the Specifications section on page 58. Inspect the rim bolt holes for elongation before retorquing, and recheck the hardware after a short period of work, since a wheel that has run loose tends to loosen again.

Manual Section: Specifications p. 58

Frequently Asked Questions

How to reset Ford 2120 oil pressure warning light?

The engine oil pressure warning light will go out once the underlying cause of low oil pressure is resolved. If the light comes on, stop the engine immediately and investigate the cause, regularly checking the crankcase for proper oil level. p. 10

What are the replacement specifications for Battery and terminals?

The Ford 2120 tractor uses a 12-Volt battery with a 100 amp. Hour Rating and Negative Ground. For maintenance, keep battery connections tight and free of corrosion, clean the outside surface and terminals with an ammonia or baking soda-water solution, and apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the terminals. Check the electrolyte level every 50 hours. p. 47

What is the recommended engine oil change interval for the Ford 2120 tractor?

The engine oil should be changed every 100 hours, and the engine oil filter every 200 hours. More frequent changes are recommended if the tractor operates at maximum rated power and speed or under severe conditions, in which case the interval should be 70 hours. p. 37

What are the valve clearance specifications for the Ford 2120 engine?

The correct valve clearance for both intake and exhaust valves is 0.012 inches (0.3 mm). Valve clearance should be checked and adjusted every 600 hours with the engine cold to ensure good engine performance and prevent excessive noise or poor performance. p. 46

What is the cooling system capacity for the Ford 2120 tractor?

The cooling system capacity for the Ford 2120 tractor is 8.5 U.S. Quarts (8.0 Liters) or 7.0 Imp. Qts. It should be filled with a 50/50 solution of permanent antifreeze and clear water. p. 57
