This is the factory Ford New Holland shop manual, publication 40001020-1 printed 11/95, the full fourteen-Part, six-volume set in one file - not an abridged reprint. It covers Series 10 tractors (2610, 2810, 3610, 4110, 4610, 5610, 6610, 6710, 7610, 7710, 7810, 8210) and Series 30 (3230, 3430, 3910, 3930, 4630, 5030), plus the 234/334 highway tractors, vineyard models, the 3910 rice tractor and the 1994 upgrade machines. Every system is here: diesel and gasoline engines including the 401 CID TW engine in the 7810/8210, rotary and in-line injection pumps, clutches, all the transmissions from 8-speed non-synchro to the 16x8, hydraulics with pressure test specs, wiring, steering, front and rear axles, cab work and tractor splitting procedures.

Ford Series 10 and 30 (2610-8210) Common Problems This Manual Covers

Engine will not start or cranks slowly

Work through the Part 3 starting system section first - battery condition, cable voltage drops, starter draw. If cranking is healthy on a diesel, move to Part 2 for injection pump timing and injector testing on both the rotary and in-line pumps.

Manual Section: Part 3 - Electrical System / Part 2 - Fuel Systems p. 444
Hydraulic lift loses pressure or will not raise

Part 8 gives the pressure testing procedure to split the fault between pump and lift cover before you pull anything. Compare readings against the safety valve spec for your model, then follow the power lift, lift cylinder and priority valve teardown steps.

Manual Section: Part 8 - Hydraulic Systems p. 1617
Engine overheating under load

The cooling system section in Part 1 covers thermostat testing, water pump inspection and radiator condition, with the troubleshooting chart to separate a lazy thermostat from a scaled radiator core or a slipping fan belt before you start replacing parts on a guess.

Manual Section: Part 1 - Engine Systems p. 53
Transmission slips or will not engage

Start with clutch free play - Part 4 covers adjustment and wear limits for both single and double clutches and their associated parts. If the clutch checks out, Part 12 gives the tractor splitting procedure you will need to get at it, step by step.

Manual Section: Part 4 - Clutches / Part 12 - Separating the Tractor p. 946

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this cover my exact model? Mine is badged differently from the list.

Page 2 prints the factory cross-reference from the older 600-series: 2600 to 2610, 3600 to 3610/2810/3230/3430, 4100 to 4110/3910/3930, 4600 to 4610/4630, 5600 to 5610, 6600 to 6610, 6700 to 6710, 7600 to 7610/7810, 7700 to 7710/8210. If your tractor descends from one of those platforms, the procedures apply. Derivatives like the 234/334 highway units and vineyard tractors get their own Part 14. p. 2

Is the wiring actually in here, or just a parts list?

Part 3 is a full electrical section: wiring, lights, switches and instrumentation, battery, starting and charging systems, ignition on the gas engines, plus the deluxe cab electrics. The optional Electronic Instrument Panel, Performance Monitor and Electronic Draft Control on later models are covered too. These are mechanical tractors - there are no fault codes or scan tools involved, you diagnose with a test light and a meter, and the manual walks you through it.

What is the lift cylinder safety valve pressure?

2750-2850 lbf/in2 (190-196 bar) on the 2610 and 3610, and 2850-2950 lbf/in2 (196-203 bar) on the 4110 through 7710. The hydraulics Part also gives the check valve opening pressure for the 5610-7710 at 70-85 lbf/in2 (4.9-5.9 bar) and full pressure testing procedures so you can verify pump condition before tearing anything down. p. 1617

How much oil does the rear axle and hydraulic system take?

20.5 Imperial quarts (23.3 litres) on the 2610 and 3610, and 46.3 Imperial quarts (53.0 litres) on the 5610 through 7710 - the rear axle and hydraulics share the same sump on these machines. The engine-mounted hydraulic pump on the 5610-7710 is rated at 7.1 Imperial gallons per minute (32.2 litres/min), a useful number when you are flow-testing a suspect pump.

Which transmissions and PTO setups does it cover?

Part 5 covers the eight speed non-synchromesh and synchromesh boxes, the reduction gearbox, Dual Power, the H pattern synchromesh, and the 16x8 and 8x8 fully synchronised transmissions. Part 6 covers transmission PTO, live PTO and independent PTO with specifications - for example, 540 rev/min at 1600 engine rev/min on the 2610 and 3610. Between the two Parts you have every driveline combination Ford put in these tractors.
