Boom drifts under load, park brake won't hold, safety lockouts kill your shift. This 505-20 owner's manual walks every pre-start check, hydraulic inspection, and brake test.

JCB built the 505-20 Loadall as a rough terrain variable reach truck, and this owner's manual (OEM #9831/5117) stays on that one machine across 280 pages. Operating procedures cover load charts, boom indicator readings, inclinometer use, steer mode selection, and the startup-to-park sequence. Attachment work covers quick-fit carriages, extension jibs, roof truss jibs, hooks, and personnel work platforms, down to connecting and disconnecting hydraulic hoses. The maintenance section lays out pre-start cold checks, service intervals, and fluid capacities for a sharper daily walkaround. Torque the front wheel nuts to 500N·m (369lb.ft.); run your 12.5/80 R18 Solideal tires at 4.3bar (62psi). Factory numbers, not forum guesses. Bookmarked throughout, so it opens fast on a tablet right at the bench.

JCB 505-20 Common Problems This Manual Covers

JCB 505-20 boom responds slowly or stops moving entirely during cold weather startup p. 104

Allow the engine to idle and cycle hydraulic functions gently for at least 10 minutes before loading in cold conditions. Hydraulic oil must be above 0°C (32.0°F) for proper system response (page 104). If sluggishness persists at normal temperatures, check the hydraulic tank level (capacity 48.7L/13USgal) and inspect all hoses for kinks or displaced fittings.

Manual Section: Operation: Operating Instructions
Park brake will not hold the machine on level ground during safety test p. 220

Disengage the park brake at once and hold the machine in position with the drive controls. Do not put the machine to work until the brake test passes. Tag it out and contact your JCB dealer for service.

Manual Section: Maintenance: Brakes
Hydraulic or auxiliary hoses show cuts, weeping oil, or kinked sections at fittings p. 239

Inspect all hydraulic hoses and auxiliary circuits during the daily walk-around for cuts, abrasion, kinking, or oil weeping at connections. Any replacement hose must match the original in size, standard and pressure rating (page 239). If you find active leaking at a stabilizer leg or auxiliary line, isolate the machine immediately. Never probe a pressurized hydraulic leak with bare hands.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System Check (Condition)
Tyre sidewall damage, pressure loss, or loose wheel nuts found during walk-around p. 268

Check all four tyres before each shift for sidewall cuts, embedded objects, tread damage, and correct inflation. Standard 12.5/80 R18 tyres require 4.3 bar (62 psi) (page 268). Inspect all wheel nuts for security; correct torque is 500N·m (369lb.ft.) on both axles (page 261). Replace any tyre showing sidewall bulging or exposed cord before the machine returns to work.

Manual Section: Walk-Around Inspection (General)
Warning lights stay on or flash repeatedly on the display after engine startup p. 84

Read the Instrument Panel (page 84) to identify the specific warning when lights stay on or flash after startup. If any light fails to go off, or comes on while the engine is running, stop the engine as soon as it is safe to do so and contact your JCB dealer. Do not race the engine until the oil pressure low light has gone off (page 62).
