Part of the New Holland Repair Manuals.
This 195-page Mitsubishi S3L Service Manual covers the whole diesel engine family: S3L, S3L-T, S3L2, S3L2-T, S4L, S4L-T, S4L2, and S4L2-T, so whichever variant sits in your machine, you're covered. Inside you get wiring diagrams for chasing electrical gremlins, exploded views for parts orientation during teardown, and a full troubleshooting section that walks through symptoms instead of leaving you guessing. You also get component location guides broken out by model, so you're not hunting for the fuel filter on an S4L-T using S3L pictures. Check the fuel injection nozzle holder torque at 5.5 kgf-m (54 N-m) and swap the fuel filter element every 500 hours, cartridge type every 400. No more calling around for a spec some parts counter guy half-remembers. Bookmarked and searchable, so you jump straight to your engine's section and get back to the shop floor.

Mitsubishi S3L–S4L2 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers
Mitsubishi S3L series diesel engine overheating rapidly under load with coolant boiling over.
Test the thermostat in a water bath as shown on page 136. Verify the valve starts opening at exactly 82 ± 1.5°C (180 ± 2.7°F). Inspect the fan belt deflection. Adjust the tension until deflection is 10 to 12 mm (0.4 to 0.5 in.) under 10 kgf force as specified on page 184.
Manual Section: Service Procedures p. 136Continuous white smoke from exhaust and bubbles in the radiator neck after hard running.
Remove the cylinder head and inspect the gasket for blowouts. Clean the block mating surface thoroughly. Install a new head gasket and torque all cylinder head bolts to 9 ± 0.5 kgf·m (65 ± 4 lbf·ft) following the sequence on page 191. Do not guess these torque values.
Manual Section: Torque Specifications p. 191Oil warning light flickers at idle or stays illuminated when engine is warm.
Check the oil pressure switch closing pressure using a calibrated gauge. Replace the switch if it triggers outside the 0.5 ± 0.1 kgf/cm² (7 ± 1.4 psi) specification listed on page 188. Drain the oil and inspect the filter for metal shavings indicating bearing wear.
Manual Section: Technical Specifications p. 188Engine misfires, runs rough under heavy load, and lacks power with burned fuel injectors.
Replace the damaged fuel injectors and check the fuel filter element. Install a new element if past the 500 service hours interval on page 163. Torque the fuel injection nozzle holders to exactly 5.5 ± 0.5 kgf·m (40 ± 4 lbf·ft) as instructed on page 183 to prevent compression leaks.
Manual Section: Service Procedures p. 183Frequently Asked Questions
What are the torque specs for Mitsubishi S4L2-T cylinder head bolts?
The cylinder head bolts (M10, 1.25 pitch, 14 width, 87 clamp length) should be tightened to a torque of 9 ± 0.5 kgf·m (65 ± 4 lbf·ft) [88 ± 5 N·m]. The tightening procedure involves tightening the bolts in number sequence in two or three steps. p. 191
How to reset the fuel injection timing on Mitsubishi S4L engine?
Fuel injection timing is adjusted by changing the thickness of shims under the fuel injection pump. An increase or decrease of the shims by 0.1 mm (0.004 in.) will vary the timing by 1°. To retard the timing, increase shim thickness; to advance it, decrease shim thickness. p. 179
What are the torque settings for Mitsubishi S3L intake manifold bolts?
The bolts for the air inlet cover (which is part of the intake system) should be tightened to a torque of 1.85 ± 0.35 kgf·m (13.4 ± 2.5 lbf·ft) [18 ± 3.4 N·m]. p. 103
What are the replacement specifications for Fuel filter?
The fuel filter element should be cleaned every 100 service hours and replaced every 500 service hours. For cartridge-type fuel filters, replace the entire assembly if water and sediment have accumulated. p. 170
