New Holland T3010, T3020, T3030, T3040 Common Problems This Manual Covers
New Holland T3040 engine won't start or cranks slowly, worse on cold mornings
Test the battery first; it must hold 12 V and the full 60 Ah rated capacity listed on page 426 under load. Clean and tighten both ground straps before condemning the starter. Bench-test the 1.2 kW starter motor next; maximum no-load draw is 60 A at 11.7 V and 7000 rpm per the specs on page 408.
Manual Section: Electrical System p. 426Rear hydraulic lift raises slowly, jerks under load, or arms drop with implement attached
Check hydraulic oil level and condition before touching anything else; milky or dark oil means water or clutch debris, so drain and refill. Bleed air from the suction side and clean the intake screen. Verify lift arm safety travel measures 10 to 15 mm per the adjustment procedure on page 291, and reset the control valve linkage if it doesn't.
Manual Section: Hydraulic Systems p. 291PTO slips and loses speed under load, hard to select PTO speed
Measure PTO clutch pedal idle travel first and adjust the linkage until you get 25 to 30 mm as specified on page 175. If slipping continues after adjustment, split the tractor and measure the driven plate; replace it if worn below the 7.2 to 7.8 mm thickness range on page 156. Check the facings for oil contamination while you're in there.
Manual Section: Clutch p. 175Clutch slips on hills, pedal feels stiff, sticks and drags when shifting
Check pedal free play and linkage adjustment before pulling anything apart; a dragging or slipping clutch on these tractors usually needs adjustment, not parts. If you do split the tractor, inspect the release bearing and pressure plate fingers, and torque the clutch housing retaining nuts to 117 to 129 Nm on reassembly per the chart on page 156.
Manual Section: Clutch p. 156Engine overheats and loses power during heavy fieldwork, black smoke under load
Work through the engine troubleshooting chart that starts on page 40. Blow out the air filter element and radiator core, check fan belt tension, and pressure-test the cooling system for leaks. If the head gasket is weeping, resurface the head and retorque the cylinder head bolts to 85.3 to 91.2 Nm per the torque specs on page 27.
Manual Section: Engine p. 40Frequently Asked Questions
What are the torque specifications for the cylinder head bolts on the T3010, T3020, T3030, and T3040 tractors?
The cylinder head bolts for these tractor models must be tightened to a torque value between 85.3 and 91.2 Nm (8.7 to 9.3 kgm). p. 27
What is the correct procedure for checking the alternator drive belt tension on a tractor without a cab?
To check the tension, apply a load of 98 to 118 N (22.04 to 26.45 lbf) to the center of the belt run. The belt should deflect by 10 to 15 mm (0.39 to 0.59 in). p. 421
What is the recommended lubrication oil for the engine on these tractors?
The recommended lubrication oil for the engine is AMBRA SUPER GOLD. p. 20
What is the valve clearance for the intake and exhaust valves on the T3010, T3020, and T3030 engines?
The valve clearance for both intake and exhaust valves, when the engine is cold, should be between 0.15 and 0.25 mm. p. 24
What is the procedure for checking the working pressure of the hydraulic lift?
To check the working pressure for auxiliary control valves, insert the union 380000554 into a quick-fit female half-coupling and connect it to a 0 to 250 kg/cm2 pressure gauge. The pressure should be between 2682 and 2755 psi (185 to 190 bar). p. 298
