Valve lash on the 6LP-DTE series runs 0.15 to 0.25 mm on the intake side, while the STE series calls for 0.17 to 0.23, and guessing between the two is how a fresh head job goes wrong. This is Yanmar's own service manual, publication HINSHI-H10-001-2, for the 6LP-DTE, 6LP-DTZE(1), 6LPA-DTP, 6LPA-DTZP, 6LP-STE, 6LP-STZE(1), 6LPA-STP, and 6LPA-STZP marine diesel engines.
The heart of the book is the Engine Overhaul section, pages 44 to 219: cylinder head, cylinder block, timing belt and timing gear, valve clearance inspection and adjustment, and injection timing.
