Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
On a Case 2470 or 2670 the RPS-34 power shift is the system most owners worry about. This factory manual takes it apart clutch by clutch. It has troubleshooting charts, pressure and PTO tests, and a full overhaul of the transmission both with and without PTO.
The book also covers the rest of the tractor: the 504 BDT and 504 BDTI diesels, fuel injection, triple pump hydraulics, front and rear steering, axles and planetaries, brakes, cab wiring and air conditioning. Wiring diagrams and hydraulic oil flow schematics show where the current and the oil actually go.
Nothing stops a job faster than a head on the bench and no torque figure to put it back on. The figure is in here, so the tractor is running again before the weather turns.

Case 2470, 2670 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Low pressure to all clutches
First check the cold oil relief valve, which can bypass below pressure regulator valve pressure. Next suspect a weak pressure regulator spool spring. Add shims until the gauge reads 180 to 200 PSI at full engine speed with hot oil. If it still reads low, the main pump may be short on flow, and you will need a flow check.
Manual Section: Power shift transmission and PTO [6001] - Trouble Shooting RPS-34 Power Shift - Low pressure to all clutches p. 724Tractor will not pull in low or second, but pulls in high or reverse
This usually points to the C-1 clutch. The C-1 plate may be split in half through the slots or completely worn out. Before splitting anything, check the RPS output gear snap ring and look for plugged hydraulic filters. The troubleshooting charts find the fault, and the overhaul section covers the teardown.
Manual Section: Power shift transmission and PTO [6001] - Trouble Shooting RPS-34 Power Shift - Will not pull in low or second p. 726Engine hard to start or will not start, no smoke from the exhaust
Make sure the fuel shut-off is fully open and the final air filter is not plugged. The starter must crank the engine at 200 to 300 RPM, so check the batteries, cables, solenoid and starter. Then look for no fuel, air in the system (bleed it), a plugged fuel line, a clogged filter, or wrong or contaminated fuel.
Manual Section: Engine diagnosis [2001] - Engine hard to start or will not start p. 88Engine overheats
Start with the easy checks: a loose fan belt, low coolant, low oil level, bent or plugged radiator fins, missing radiator baffling and a bad radiator cap. After that, check the thermostat, water pump and injection timing. A blown head gasket is the last suspect, and the engine overhaul section covers that job.
Manual Section: Engine diagnosis [2001] - Engine overheats p. 97Frequently Asked Questions
How much engine oil does the Case 2470 and 2670 take?
The 2470 takes 23 U.S. qts. (21.8 litres) with filters and 19 U.S. qts. without them. The 2670 takes more: 28 U.S. qts. (26.5 litres) with filters and 24 U.S. qts. without. The lubrication charts list the rest of the fill points. p. 4
What is the valve clearance on the Case 2470 / 2670 504 engine?
Intake is .015 in. (0.381 mm), hot or cold. Exhaust is .020 in. (0.508 mm) hot and .025 in. (0.635 mm) cold. The settings are the same for the 504 BDT in the 2470 and the 504 BDTI in the 2670. p. 4
What is the cooling system capacity of the Case 2470 and 2670?
The 2470 holds 44 U.S. quarts (41.6 litres) and the 2670 holds 48 qts. (45.4 litres). The thermostat starts to open at about 175 F (79 C) and is fully open at 202 F (94 C). Use those numbers when you judge whether a thermostat is doing its job. p. 5
What is the cylinder head bolt torque on the Case 504 BDT engine?
Head bolts go to 200 to 210 ft. lbs. (271 to 285 Nm). Connecting rod and flywheel bolt torques are in the same detailed engine specification table. p. 51
What is the clutch pressure of the RPS-34 power shift transmission on the 2470 / 2670?
Flow divider valve clutch pressure is 180 to 200 PSI (1 241 to 1 379 kPa). Read it at full engine speed with the oil at operating temperature. If every clutch reads low, you can shim the pressure regulator spool spring to bring the pressure into range. p. 66
