Check cranking voltage first: crank the engine and watch the voltmeter, it must hold at least 18 volts during the load test on page 62. Below that, clean and tighten battery cables, then load test each battery separately. If voltage holds but the starter drags, trace the starter circuit using the wiring diagram on page 209.

Check for fuel restriction before blaming the injection pump. Replace the fuel filter, then bleed air from the system until fuel runs solid at the pump with no bubbles. Confirm the tank actually has fuel; it holds 75 gallons (284 L) and gauges lie. Work through the engine troubleshooting procedure on page 102 if it still stalls hot.

Check hydraulic oil level on the sight gauge first; the system holds 65 gallons (246 L), and running low pulls air in and foams the oil. Tighten every suction line fitting between tank and pump. Then test main relief pressure; it should hold 3300 psi (22 700 kPa) per page 79. Reset or repair the relief if it comes in low.
