Part of the Case IH Repair Manuals.
Every page of this factory Case IH book is aimed at one result: an Early Riser 1210, 1220 or 1230 that puts seed at depth and spacing when the ground is ready. It covers the multivalve and vacuum fan hydraulics, row units, metering drives, markers, the 1230 air clutch and frame fold, and the granular chemical and liquid fertilizer options.
Guessing gets expensive fast. You can buy a fan motor when the real problem was a swapped hose, or pull a row unit apart twice because the disc gap was never measured. Here the flow figures, gaps and torque values are printed next to the procedure.
Buy it once and it stays in the shop with this planter, so the next breakdown costs you an afternoon instead of a planting window.

Case IH 1210, 1220, 1230 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Vacuum fan won't come up to speed, or fan speed fluctuates
Start at the tractor. Check the couplers and the in-cab remote settings, then put a flowmeter on the remote. On a PTO pump setup, the PTO control must be at 1000 RPM or greater and the reservoir full. Next, push the manual plunger on the spool valve and clean the valve if it sticks. Check the solenoid coil with a multimeter and flow test the input line for a blockage.
Manual Section: Seeding, vacuum system [10.H] - Vacuum fan not up to speed or fan speed fluctuates p. 1367Hydraulic motor not driving the vacuum fan
Check the tractor reservoir level first, then make sure the tractor auxiliary valve is set to maximum flow. Flush or replace a blocked supply or return line. If measured flow reads 45 - 49 L/min (12 - 13 US gpm) and the fan still won't turn, the motor is at fault and gets replaced. The same section covers the flow control valve and the fan motor reseal.
Manual Section: Seeding, vacuum system [10.H] - Motor not driving the vacuum fan p. 1369No vacuum or low vacuum at the meters
Go over the delivery system first: shroud, manifold, tubes and hoses. Reseal or replace whatever leaks. Then pull the fan, check the impeller for damage and check for a missing or broken drive key. Confirm rotation too, because a motor mounted upside down or swapped supply and return lines spin the fan the wrong way. The impeller nut goes back on at 52 - 57 Nm (38 - 42 lb ft).
Manual Section: Seeding, vacuum system [10.H] - No vacuum or low vacuum p. 1370Marker does not extend or retract
Check the marker setup and switch settings, and make sure the transport lock pins are out. Verify tractor remote flow. Then check the electrics: there should be 12 volts at the solenoid, and coil resistance should be 3 - 10 ohms on the 1210 and 1220, or 4 - 7 ohms on the 1230. If those check out, suspect a damaged spool valve or a contaminated valve block.
Manual Section: Seeding, marking system [10.J] - Marker does not extend or retract p. 1401Frequently Asked Questions
What oil flow should the vacuum fan motor supply line show on the Early Riser 1220?
Put a flowmeter between multivalve port M1 and the right hand motor port. If it reads 41.6 - 49.2 L/min (11 - 13 US gpm), the supply side is fine, so test the output line from the motor next. If the reading is outside that range, check the multivalve block and the supply line before you blame the motor. p. 1367
What is the maximum back pressure on the Case IH 1220 vacuum fan case drain?
Back pressure on the vacuum fan motor case drain can't go over 172 kPa (23 psi). The case drain has to go to a low pressure return port on the tractor. p. 32
How do I set the gauge wheel to opener disc gap on the Early Riser row unit?
The gauge wheel tire lip should just touch the opener disc, with no more than 3 mm (0.118 in) between the lip and the disc. Set it by adding or removing washers. After you replace gauge wheels or gauge wheel arms, recheck planting depth. p. 1280
What is the ground speed sensor gap on the Early Riser planter?
Set 2.5 mm (0.098 in) between the ground speed sensor and the sprocket. It must never be closer than 1.0 mm or farther than 4.0 mm. Loosen the tensioning nut, set the gap with the adjusting nut, then lock it back down. p. 1178
What torque do the vacuum fan motor hoses take on the Case IH Early Riser 1210, 1220 and 1230?
Each hose takes a different value. The supply hose gets 47 - 54 Nm (35 - 40 lb ft), the return hose 104 - 111 Nm (77 - 82 lb ft), and the case drain hose 20 - 27 Nm (15 - 20 lb ft). The motor mounting nuts take 61 - 68 Nm (45 - 50 lb ft). p. 1394
