Crankshaft out, bearing caps on the bench, and no torque figures within reach. The Case IH 445/M2, 445T/M2 Repair Manual PDF, 180 pages under OEM number 6-17660, is the factory book for this four cylinder engine. Overhaul is split by feed system, so you follow one path for the mechanical rotary pump and another for the in-line pump unit, each running from engine setting through disassembly to feed system bleed. Cylinder unit, timing system, output shaft, connecting rod and piston, and cylinder head work fill the largest stretch of the book, backed by clearance data, troubleshooting charts and maintenance planning. Set injection pressure at 245 bar on the F4GE0404A*D6 and 260 bar on the rest, check that the thermostat starts opening at 81 ± 2 °C, and pull main bearing caps to 50 ± 6 Nm before the 80 ± 6 Nm second stage. Every hour that engine sits apart costs you. Bookmarked and text searchable, so the section you want is two clicks away.

Case IH 445/M2, 445T/M2 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Case IH 445/M2 engine will not start, cranks slowly or fires briefly then dies

Check the battery terminals for corrosion and measure resting voltage before condemning the starter. Work the troubleshooting procedures starting on page 119 for no-start conditions, then bleed the feed circuit until fuel runs clear of bubbles. Verify injection pump timing and injector pop pressure against the 260 bar figure listed on page 137.

Manual Section: Troubleshooting and Maintenance Planning p. 119
White smoke on start-up and under load, engine slow to warm up

Test the thermostat in hot water and confirm it starts opening at 81 plus or minus 2 degrees C as specified on page 38. If it opens late or sticks, replace it. Then pull the injectors and pop test them, since retarded timing and a dribbling nozzle both feed raw fuel past cold rings.

Manual Section: General Information and Mechanical Components p. 38
Irregular running, lacks power, misfires under load with rough idle

Pop test each injector and compare against the 260 bar injection pressure on page 137 (245 bar on the F4GE0404A*D6 build). Replace any nozzle that dribbles or opens low. Follow the troubleshooting sequence on page 120 for irregular running, then run a compression check before you blame fuel delivery.

Manual Section: Troubleshooting and Maintenance Planning p. 120
Fuel system loses prime, air bubbles in lines after filter change

Bleed the feed circuit using the procedure for your pump type, page 72 for the rotary pump or page 103 for the in line pump. Loosen the bleeder vent screw on the fuel filter and work the priming pump until fuel drains from the screw with no bubbles, then tighten it. Any work on the feed circuit calls for the same bleed.

Manual Section: Feed p. 72
Low oil pressure at idle on a warm engine, light flickers

Warm the engine and put a mechanical gauge on it. Idle pressure should hold 0.70 bar and rise to 3.50 bar at peak rpm per the specifications on page 38. Below that, drop the pan and measure main and rod bearing clearance. Refill with 9.5 liters when the filter is changed, 8.5 liters sump only.

Manual Section: General Information and Mechanical Components p. 38
Repeated rear main seal leaks and oil weeping after rebuild

Measure crankshaft endplay before the pan goes back on and check the seal running surface for a groove. Torque main bearing caps in three stages per page 105: 50 plus or minus 6 Nm, then 80 plus or minus 6 Nm, then a final 90° angle, and pull connecting rod bolts to 30 plus or minus 3 Nm followed by 60 plus or minus 5 Nm.
