Fits the Case IH 8455, 8460 and 8465 round balers built from 1988 through 1999. That includes the 8465 Automatic and the 8455/8465 set up to run on tractor hydraulics. Pickup, drive, tailgate and ejector, twine and mesh wrap, mainframe, electrical console and hydraulics are all covered.

Balers quit when the hay is fit, not when the dealer is open. Too often the job stalls on one number, like gearbox oil quantity or wheel nut torque, after the parts counter has closed. The spec tables, schematics and Problem/Cause/Correction charts give you that number.

Put it on a phone or tablet and it rides in the tractor cab or sits on the shop bench. When the baler stops at the far end of the field, the book is already there.

Case IH 8455, 8460, 8465 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Baler plugs or starts making an unusual noise

Stop the engine and all operation before you unclog, adjust or lubricate anything. The safety page says to check the baler at least daily for unusual noise, which can mean a failed bearing or interference building up heat, and dry crop near hot parts is a fire risk on a round baler. The starting roll carries rubber flaps that help start the bale, and the Mainframe section describes how it works.

Manual Section: General / Safety Precautions; Mainframe / System Description p. 56
Bale density (belt tension) circuit will not build pressure before baling or bleeds off during the bale

Tighten and inspect every fitting on the belt tension circuit first, since a loose one is the cheapest fix. If it's dry, follow the Problem/Cause/Correction chart for your model variant. Test the check valve, relief valve and belt tension dump valve against the Basic Hydraulic Schematic.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 734
Twine arm will not leave the home position, or moves slowly and erratically

Check the twine arm timing and adjustment in the Bale Wrapper section before replacing anything. If the timing is right, go to the Electrical System section. Check the arm's switches and wiring for voltage and continuity using the Electrical Schematic and terminal numbers, then replace a failed switch or repair the broken wire.

Manual Section: Bale Wrapper / Electrical System p. 700
Tailgate will not raise to eject the bale

Confirm the tractor is supplying hydraulic pressure before you pull the baler apart. Then use the Hydraulic System Troubleshooting chart to check the tailgate cylinder and counterbalance valve. The Tailgate and Ejector section covers the operation and adjustment you need once the circuit is back.

Manual Section: Tailgate and Ejector / Hydraulic System p. 716

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this cover my 8455 on tractor hydraulics, or only the 8465 Automatic?

It covers both, plus the 8460. The Drive System and Hydraulic System sections are split by model variant, so you trace the circuit your baler actually has. Approximate weights are 5750 lb for the 8465 Automatic, 5250 lb for the 8460 and 4800 lb for the 8455. Bale width is 61.5 in on the 8465/8460 and 46.5 in on the 8455. p. 13

My bale density circuit loses pressure partway through a bale. Where do I start?

Start with the cheap stuff: loose fittings and weeping hose ends on the belt tension circuit. If it's dry outside, the leak is probably internal. Work through the Hydraulic System Troubleshooting for your model, which covers the check valve, relief valve and belt tension dump valve. The Basic Hydraulic Schematic shows which valve holds pressure at each stage. p. 734

How do I track down an Auto mode problem on the baler control console?

The console is switches and relays on a 12V DC system, so a multimeter does the diagnosing. The Auto Mode Troubleshooting Chart points you to the switch or circuit to check first. The Electrical Schematic and its terminal numbers tell you where to put the probes. Check voltage and continuity terminal by terminal until the reading drops out. p. 345

What size tractor do I need, and can it run on a 1000 rpm PTO?

The minimum is 70 PTO hp (52 kW). The PTO shaft comes standard at 540 rpm, with an optional 1000 rpm conversion. If your tractor has a 1000 rpm stub, set the baler up to match before you hook up. The 8455/8465 tractor hydraulics versions also need working remote hydraulics on the tractor. p. 18

What fill quantities and torque values are in the book?

The hydraulic system holds 7 U.S. gallons (26.5 L), and the gearbox takes 1.75 pints (0.83 L). Wheel nuts torque to 120 lb-ft (165 N-m). Everything else runs off the Standard Torque Specifications table in General Information. The Maintenance Checklist covers what to look at before the season starts. p. 32
