Case IH's own factory service manual for the CVT Puma 165, 180, 195, 210 and 225, publication 84190392A dated 12/2009. An earlier June 2009 edition (84172758A) covers the same five tractors; this is the later revision. It follows Case IH's section order, from the primary hydraulic power system through the CVT power train to steering and brakes. Engine data is written to the FPT F4DE9684 engine code, and the electrical schematics are split by frame number.

When the charge pressure light flashes at the far end of a field, there is nobody beside you to ask. This book gives you the Problem/Possible Cause/Correction tables, the U-code error list and the clutch calibration steps.

Print the sections you need and take them to the bench. Hydraulic oil on the pages does no harm. Fix it, calibrate it and get the Puma back in the field before the weather turns.

Case IH Puma 165–225 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Charge pressure warning light flashing

Check rear axle oil level first, because low oil is a common cause. Then look at the hydraulic filters and the charge pump inlet filters for dirt or blockage. If pressure reads 2-4 bar (29.0-58.0 psi) and the light still flashes, test the low charge pressure switch.

Manual Section: Primary Hydraulic Power System p. 80
Power steering weak or not working

Start with the steering pressure test in Travelling - Steering (Hydraulic and AutoPilot). Wrong system pressure points to a sticking priority valve or a worn hydraulic pump. Check the priority valve in the Primary Hydraulic Power System section before you pull the pump. After that, inspect the steering motor and control valve.

Manual Section: Travelling - Steering (Hydraulic and AutoPilot) p. 80
Rear PTO does not engage

Check transmission oil level and the oil filter first, because low oil or a blocked filter will stop the PTO from engaging. Then test the PTO engagement switch and the engagement solenoid valve. The Power Train - Rear and Front PTO Hydraulic section covers PTO troubleshooting and the solenoid.

Manual Section: Power Train - Rear and Front PTO Hydraulic p. 1448
CVT pressure sensor replaced but a fault stays on the cluster

Tighten pressure sensor P1 (B036) to 20 Nm (14.8 lb ft) and no more. Then check its wiring against the schematic for your frame number. If the U-code comes back, work through the error list in Electronic System and Fault Codes and the clutch calibration in Power Train - CVT Transmission.

Frequently Asked Questions

What charge pressure should the primary hydraulic system hold on a CVT Puma?

Charge pressure should sit at 2-4 bar (29.0-58.0 psi). The Primary Hydraulic Power System section covers the charge pump, variable displacement pump, priority valve and vane pump. If the warning light flashes, check rear axle oil level and the filters before you condemn the low charge pressure switch. p. 34

Does the manual list the U-codes that show up on the instrument cluster?

The Electronic System and Fault Codes section has the U-code error list, plus the control modules and their calibration procedures. Troubleshooting runs through Problem, Possible Cause and Correction tables, so you test before you order parts. CVT clutch calibration and the pressure sensors are in the Power Train - CVT Transmission section. p. 775

My steering has gone heavy. Does the manual cover the pressure test and AutoPilot?

The Travelling - Steering section covers both hydraulic steering and AutoPilot. It has the steering pressure test, the steering motor and the control valve. Weak steering usually comes down to wrong system pressure, a worn hydraulic pump or a sticking priority valve. Run the pressure test first so you know which one you are chasing. p. 80

Are the brakes covered, including air brakes?

Travelling - Brakes, Suspension and Wheels covers the mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic service brake, plus the parking brake. On a tractor that pulls heavy loads down wet farm lanes, you do not want to guess at brakes. Find the part that matches your brake setup before you strip anything. p. 1727

What engine is in the Puma 165 through 225, and how much oil does it take?

All five models run the FPT F4DE9684 six-cylinder diesel: 6728 cm3 (411 in3), Tier 3, with a Holset turbo and an air-to-air intercooler. Bore and stroke are 104 mm x 132 mm, compression is 16.5:1 and rated speed is 2200 RPM. The sump takes 15 l (4.0 US gal). Power runs from 123 kW (165 Hp) unboosted on the 165 to 181 kW (244 Hp) boosted on the 225. p. 846
