Part of the Case IH Repair Manuals.
A monitor system fault is where the electrical chapter begins in this 179-page Case IH 8500 service manual PDF (OEM 8-66000), written for the 8500 Grain Drill and Air Drill. A wiring schematic, sensor adjustments and electric clutch service follow, and hydraulic schematics sit with that circuit's specifications and troubleshooting. Your general pages hold torque specifications, maintenance and lubrication, and hydraulic specifications; mounted equipment covers the hopper, grain and fertilizer metering, furrow openers and press wheels, wheels and tires, wheel bearings and gauge wheel alignment. Grain wheel to feed cup clearance is 0.010 inch (0.25 mm). Hold main jackshaft drive chain deflection to 1/2 to 3/4 inch (12 to 19 mm). When you are tracing the drill's hydraulic circuit, the schematics show how the pump, flow control valve, fan drive motor and cylinders connect. Bought once, the bookmarked PDF stays yours for this 8500, ready whenever the metering system or electric clutch needs service.

Case IH 8500 Grain Drill Common Problems This Manual Covers
Case IH 8500 air drill electric clutch slipping, seed and fertilizer drive shaft turns before full torque
Check electric clutch torque following the procedure on page 67. If the shaft turns before you reach 250 pound-feet (339 N m), burnish the clutch, then recheck the torque. If it still slips after burnishing, go to disassembly and inspection in the Electric Clutch section. This clutch drives both the seed and fertilizer drives, so get it holding before you seed.
Manual Section: Electric Clutch Troubleshooting p. 67Monitor flow sensors give blockage alarms with no restriction or miss real blockages at the openers
Check the SENS setting in Program 4 on page 33 for the seed or fertilizer you are running. A low number gives alarms without restrictions; a high number gives restrictions without alarms. Then test each sensor in Test Mode 2 per page 32: tap it with a screwdriver and the display word must go off. If it does not, check the wires, then replace the sensor.
Manual Section: Monitor System Troubleshooting p. 32Fan speed alarm sounds during seeding with the monitor flashing FAN on the display screen
Push FAN RPM and read actual fan speed, then check the SET value in the Fan Alarm Program on page 34. The alarm trips when fan speed rises roughly 200 rpm above or drops about 600 rpm below the set point. Set it to the seeding chart speed for your seed, inside the 2800 to 4000 rpm adjustable fan range listed on page 27.
Manual Section: Monitor System Troubleshooting p. 34Main jackshaft, grain or fertilizer drive chain slack with deflection outside the specified range
Measure chain deflection following page 127. The main jackshaft, grain, fertilizer jackshaft and fertilizer drive chains must deflect 1/2 to 3/4 inch (12 to 19 mm). The clutch drive chain on page 126 runs looser at 1 to 1-1/2 inch (25 to 38 mm). Adjust tension to spec, and never lube the chains with grease or engine oil that holds dust (page 23).
Manual Section: Mounted Equipment p. 127Fertilizer clutch slipping on the fertilizer metering system drive while the drill is seeding
Adjust the fertilizer clutch by tightening the clutch cover until you have 0.020 inch (0.51 mm) clearance between the spring washers, following page 150. If it still slips, disassemble and inspect the clutch per the Fertilizer Clutch section. Also empty the fertilizer hopper at night; page 124 warns that fertilizer left overnight goes hard and can damage the metering system.
Manual Section: Fertilizer Clutch Troubleshooting p. 150Furrow opener shear pin sheared off and opener spring pressure rod out of adjustment
Lower all attachments to the ground or support them on stands before you work on the openers, per the caution on page 7. Replace the broken pin with a correct shear pin; page 161 says never use a nail, wire or similar substitute. Then adjust the spring pressure rod following the Furrow Opener section procedure before the drill goes back to seeding.
Manual Section: Furrow Opener Troubleshooting p. 161Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reset the total area on the monitor?
To reset the total area to zero, press and hold the TOTAL AREA switch for three seconds until the display shows CLR AREA. Continue to hold the switch for another 2 seconds to complete the reset. p. 30
What is the torque specification for a 1/2 inch Grade 5 bolt on the Case IH 8500 grain drill?
The torque specification for a 1/2 inch Grade 5 bolt is 80-96 pound-feet (109-130 Newton metres). p. 9
What is the required fan speed for the 8500 Grain Drill?
The fan speed is adjustable and should be maintained between 2800 to 4000 rpm (r/min). p. 27
How do I check the hydraulic pump output?
The hydraulic pump output must be a minimum of 13.7 gpm at 1000 PTO rpm. To test, connect a flowmeter to the pump outlet and run the engine at full throttle, closing the pressure valve until the pressure reaches 2650 psi. p. 89
What is the correct procedure for adjusting the fertilizer gate clearance on a Case IH 8500 grain drill?
The clearance between the fertilizer gate and the top of the fertilizer wheel must be 5/16 inch (8 mm). Use a 5/16 inch drill bit as a gauge to set this space by loosening the lock screw and adjusting the gate. p. 142
