Part of the Case IH Repair Manuals.
More than 4,200 pages of Case IH factory service data stand between a stalled 7230, 8230 or 9230 and a combine that finishes the field. This manual covers model year 2013 production, PIN YDG218533 and up, with the Tier 4a FPT Cursor engines and SCR exhaust treatment.
Few things wear on you like a plugged rotor with rain an hour out, or a DEF dosing warning halfway down a pass. The book covers feeder and rotor reversing, concave calibration, the hydrostatic drive, the load sensing hydraulics and the fault codes.
The electrical and hydraulic/hydrostatic schematics are fold-out sheets at the back, next to the special tool index. Trace the fault, fix it, and get the header back in the crop.

Case IH Axial-Flow 7230, 8230, 9230 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Tailings return belt slipping or wearing fast
Check belt tension using the indicator on the tensioner. According to the Cleaning - Tailings return system section, the belt is set right when the spring length matches the indicator length seen through the slot. Adjust it there and the tailings keep moving instead of piling up and loading the system.
Manual Section: Cleaning - Tailings return system (page 3925) p. 3925Rotor or feeder plugged under load
Don't try to power a slug through. The Hydrostatic drive section says to disengage the separator, then run the feeder reverser and rotor reverser for 10 seconds. That backs the crop out without shock loading the drives, and you can re-engage once the throat is clear.
Manual Section: Hydrostatic drive (page 503) p. 503Concave clearance off after rotor or concave work
Any time the rotor or concaves have been pulled or reset, the readout can stop matching the real clearance. The Threshing - Rotor section calls for a concave position calibration, carried out as described in the Operator's Manual. Do it before the first load so threshing and grain loss settings mean something.
Manual Section: Threshing - Rotor (page 3699) p. 3699Feeder gearbox working loose or leaking oil
Check the mounting before you replace seals. The feeder drive torque table gives 174-220 Nm (129-162 lb ft) for the M16 x 60 mounting bolts. A loose gearbox moves under load and works its seals over, so torque it to spec first, then deal with any leak that's left.
Manual Section: Product feeding - Feeder drive torque table (page 3536) p. 3536Frequently Asked Questions
Does it list the fault codes, and how do I deal with a DEF/AdBlue dosing code on the Tier 4a system?
Yes. The Electrical systems FAULT CODES section pairs each code with the checks to run. For DEF/AdBlue dosing faults, it directs you to the DEF/AdBlue Dosing System Test (UDST) in the Electronic Service Tool (EST). Have EST access before you start on the SCR side, because that test is the manual's route to a diagnosis. p. 1916
What is the torque spec for the feeder gearbox mounting bolts on a Case IH Axial-Flow 7230, 8230, 9230?
The M16 x 60 feeder gearbox mounting bolts take 174-220 Nm (129-162 lb ft), from the feeder drive torque table on page 3536. A gearbox that keeps working loose or weeping oil usually comes back to these bolts. Torque values for the rotor drive are in the Main gearbox and drive and Threshing sections. p. 3536
Which machines and engines does this manual cover?
It covers the 7230, 8230 and 9230 from model year 2013 production, PIN YDG218533 and up. The 7230 runs the FPT Cursor 9 at 300 kW (402 Hp) gross. The 8230 and 9230 use the Cursor 13 at 350 kW (476 Hp) and 390 kW (523 Hp). Rated speed is 2100 RPM. p. 38
How much oil do the engine and rotor gearbox hold?
The Cursor 9 takes 27 l (7.7 US gal) of engine oil and the Cursor 13 takes 35 l (9.3 US gal). The rotor gearbox holds 7 l (1.8 US gal). All three figures are on page 33, so you can stock the right amount before the service. p. 33
What pressures should I expect when testing the hydraulics and hydrostatic drive?
The main system is closed center load sensing, rated at 160 l/min (42 US gpm) with a maximum of 21029 kPa (3050 psi). Hydrostatic max pressure is 46484 kPa (6742 psi) forward and rearward, per page 37. The fold-out hydraulic/hydrostatic schematic on pages 4226-4227 shows where each circuit runs, which pays for itself the first time you chase a pressure loss. p. 37
