Part of the Case IH Repair Manuals.
Common rail and EGR diagnostics are the hardest work on a Farmall 35C or 40C. The fault code chapters here go circuit by circuit through rail pressure, injectors, crank and cam signals, DPF overload and water in fuel.
The rest of the book covers the 3-cylinder turbo diesel, clutch, 12x12 mechanical transmission and HST, four-wheel drive, both axles, rear and mid PTO, and brakes. It also covers open-center hydraulics, the three-point hitch, power steering and cab climate control. Electrical schematic sheets for the 40C Cab and the 35C ROPS come with connector face diagrams and pin tables.
Pin down the failed part first, and you order the right one the first time and get back in the field before the weather turns.

Case IH Farmall 35C, Farmall 40C Common Problems This Manual Covers
HST tractor creeps and will not stop at neutral
Check the linkage first, because it is usually out of adjustment. Reset the neutral position using the HST control procedure. If neutral will not adjust at all, replace the trunion shaft joint. If the tractor still creeps after that, the neutral valve is defective and needs replacing.
Manual Section: Hydrostatic drive - HST troubleshooting p. 530Implement will not lift with the lever in the raised position
Adjust the external and internal linkage first. Next, run the system relief valve pressure test, since a low setting will not lift a load. Then check the safety valve and replace a restricted suction filter. Last, confirm the dump valve closes and the lowering valve is not stuck open.
Manual Section: Hitches, drawbars, and implement couplings - Troubleshooting p. 841Steering wheel is excessively stiff
Look for external misalignment of the control valve, then loosen the bolts and realign it. Contamination can seize the spool and sleeve, which then need repair or replacement. Check the steering pump drive gear and the pump for wear. Then check the relief valve setting and look for a cylinder that has lost force.
Manual Section: Steering - Power steering troubleshooting p. 896Hydraulic noise when the control valve is in neutral
This is usually the unload valve binding in the valve body, which causes vibration and noise. Pull the unload valve and clean both the valve and the valve body. Then check how the valve fits in its bore before you reassemble.
Manual Section: Hydraulic systems - Troubleshooting p. 679Frequently Asked Questions
What engine does the Farmall 35C / 40C have and how much power does it make?
Both models run a turbocharged 3-cylinder diesel of 1879 cm³ (114.7 in³), built to Tier 4B (final). The 35C has the L3C19-T5, rated at 26 kW (35 Hp) gross. The 40C has the L3C19-T4, rated at 29 kW (39 Hp) gross. p. 54
Which oil goes into the Farmall 35C / 40C transmission and hydraulics, how much, and how often is it changed?
Mechanical and HST tractors both take CASE IH AKCELA NEXPLORE FLUID. The rear axle and transmission share one 32.0 l (8.5 US gal) fill with the hydraulics. Change the transmission, rear axle and hydraulic oil every 600 hours. p. 234
What fuel does the Farmall 35C / 40C need and how often is the fuel filter changed?
Above -7 °C (19 °F), run No. 2-Diesel with a cetane rating of at least 40. Below that temperature, switch to No. 1-Diesel. Sulphur content must not exceed 0.3%. Replace the fuel filter element every 500 hours. The tank holds 47.0 L (12.4 US gal). p. 55
What are the PTO speeds on the Farmall 35C / 40C?
The rear PTO turns 540 RPM at an engine speed of 2509 RPM. Its shaft is 35.0 mm (1.4 in) with 6 splines. The optional mid PTO turns 2000 RPM at 2545 engine RPM. Its shaft is 25.4 mm (1 in) with 15 splines. p. 56
How much can the Farmall 35C / 40C tow and lift?
The maximum permissible towing weight is 1300 kg (2866 lb). Maximum drawbar load is 730 kg (1609 lb) in the short position, 504 kg (1111 lb) in regular and 344 kg (758 lb) extended. The three-point hitch lifts up to 820 kg (1807 lb) at the ball ends. p. 58
