Part of the Case IH Repair Manuals.
A Farmall 40C or 50C that cranks but will not fire, or an HST tractor that will not move, is the job this book is written for. It is CNH service manual 47941906, covering both models. Sections cover the N844L-F diesel, clutch, gear transmission, hydrostatic drive, front and rear axles, PTO, brakes, hydraulics and the three-point hitch.
Steering, wheels, cab climate control and electrical follow, with three fold-out electrical schematic posters. You get the numbers you need mid-job: 0.2 mm (0.008 in) valve clearance, 16 - 17.5° BTDC pump timing and 16671 kPa (2418 psi) lift relief. Guess at those and you buy the wrong valve, or you pull the tractor apart twice.
Run the tests in the order the book gives them and the tractor is back in the field before the weather turns.

Case IH Farmall 40C, 50C Common Problems This Manual Covers
Engine overheating under load
Work through the cooling checks in order: coolant level, fan belt tension, radiator, hoses, then thermostat. The thermostat should start to open at 82 °C (179.6 °F) and be fully open at 95 °C (203 °F). The system holds 7.5 L (2.0 US gal).
Manual Section: Engine - cooling p. 1589Low power or smoke when pulling
Check the air cleaners and fuel filters before anything else, then the EGR. If it still smokes, check injection pump timing against 16 - 17.5° BTDC. Set valve clearance cold to 0.2 mm (0.008 in), intake and exhaust. Firing order is 1-3-4-2.
Manual Section: Engine - air cleaners, fuel filters, EGR p. 47Three-point hitch or remote hydraulics weak and slow
Put a 0 - 20685 kPa (0 - 3000 psi) gauge on the front or rear remote couplers and test the main relief. Spec is 16671 kPa (2418 psi). The fixed displacement pump should deliver 33.3 L/min (8.8 US gpm) at full throttle. If pressure is right but flow is not, look at the pump.
Manual Section: Brakes, hydraulics and hitch - relief valves, fixed displacement pump p. 729Wheel working loose after a tire swap or ballast change
Torque front and rear wheel bolts to 176 - 196 N·m (130 - 145 lb ft). The steering and wheels section covers mounting along with the tie rods and cylinders.
Manual Section: Steering and wheels p. 50Frequently Asked Questions
My Farmall 40C or 50C cranks but will not start. Where do I begin?
If the filters were just changed, bleed the fuel first by pressing the manual fuel feed pump several times. The engine starting troubleshooting chart then checks the fuel shut off solenoid, safety controller, glow plug relay, glow plugs and ground, in that order. Test each glow plug with an ohmmeter. Normal reads 1 Ω. p. 1374
My HST tractor will not move in either direction. What does the manual check?
The hydrostatic drive section points to two causes: a failed input shaft or low fluid level. Check the level first. The rear axle and transmission hold 43.0 L (11.4 US gal) including hydraulics. After that, run the HST charge pressure and HST relief valve pressure tests. The high pressure relief setting is 37266 kPa (5405 psi). p. 520
The rear PTO will not engage. Is it the clutch pack or the electrics?
Start with a meter before you split anything. The PTO engages when its solenoid valve gets current at terminal 35 and ground at terminal 31. If both are there and the PTO shaft still will not turn, the fault is hydraulic or mechanical. The rear and mid PTO sections cover that teardown. p. 1115
What are the fluid capacities for servicing a Case IH Farmall 40C, 50C?
Engine crankcase with filter takes 5.7 L (6.0 US qt). The cooling system holds 7.5 L (2.0 US gal). Rear axle and transmission take 43.0 L (11.4 US gal), and that figure includes the hydraulic system. Consumables and general specifications are listed in the introduction section. p. 46
Does the book cover both the gear and hydrostatic versions?
Yes. The clutch and transmission section covers the mechanical release control, clutch and gear transmission. A separate hydrostatic drive section covers the HST pump, motor and transmission control. Both tractors are covered, the Farmall 40C with the N844L-F-30 engine and the 50C with the N844L-F-34. p. 46
