Case IH Precision Air 2230–3430 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Fan is fast
The fan troubleshooting table blames fan speed above the operator set limit. Slow the fan down or raise the high fan alarm threshold, and do not run it faster than 5500 RPM. The same table covers no oil flow to or from the fan motor. Its causes are dirty or damaged couplers, a closed control valve and an extremely low oil level. It also lists a coupler not inserted, a closed tractor control valve line, a pinched, collapsed or burst hose, and a faulty fan motor.
Manual Section: Hydraulic seeding fan system - fan troubleshooting p. 196Meter speed does not read
First, verify the sensor has power and ground. Next, check the signal voltage from the sensor. Above 8.2 V, the signal line may be shorted to power. Below 0.6 V, it is shorted to ground or open. If it reads between 7.0 - 8.2 V with the sensor unplugged, the sensor is likely bad.
Manual Section: Seeding control system - meter speed troubleshooting p. 492Many inadequate flow alarms
The flow monitoring table lists the causes in this order. First, the air cart fan speed is too slow, so increase the fan speed. Next come empty tanks, then plugged or worn openers. After that, the table lists secondary hoses blocked by wet soil and plugged primary hoses. Flow ECU and flow gateway codes are listed separately in the flow and section control fault code section.
Manual Section: Seeding control system - flow monitoring p. 570Auger will not operate
The auger troubleshooting table lists the causes in this order: no oil supply to the auger motor, hydraulic control levers returned to neutral, a faulty auger spool valve and a seized auger motor. It continues with product feed rate too high, jammed flighting and a sheared flighting drive pin. Insufficient hydraulic oil pressure means operating the tractor above idle speed. On variable drive carts the table adds a pressure valve that is not closed: close the valve.

What does fault code 520193-03 mean on a Precision Air cart?
The Air Cart Rate ECU detected abnormally high voltage on its ECU_PWR supply. The book lists three failure modes. The first is high battery voltage or a failed alternator. The second is the ECU_PWR circuit shorted to a voltage greater than 16 V. The third is faulty Rate ECU hardware or software. Solution step 1 is to cycle system power or reset the Rate ECU. Then select UTIL > FAULT and check both ACTIVE and INACTIVE faults. The book also notes that only about 1 in 10 returned Rate ECUs are actually defective. p. 664
How much hydraulic flow does a Precision Air cart need from the tractor?
The input requirement chart is based on three, four, five and six run primary + 10 port headers at 2.3 kg/min (5 lbs/min) per primary. For that setup it lists fan 2859 RPM, oil flow 52.3 L per minute (11.5 US gpm) and oil pressure 7302 kPa (1059 psi). Carts equipped with variable rate add 5.7 L/min (1.25 US gpm) per meter. High end or dual fan applications need 90 L/min @ 1380 kPa (20 US gpm @ 2500 psi), measured at the couplers. Check the case drain too. Some tractors are rated for only 11.4 L/min at 172 kPa (3 US gpm at 25 psi). Larger tanks can put 18.9 L/min (5 US gpm) or more through it. If couplers pop out when the hydraulic motor is activated, the case drain is insufficient. p. 71
What is the wheel bolt torque on a Precision Air 3430?
Rear wheel bolts take 440 Nm (325 lb ft) on a 10 bolt pattern with 18.4 x 38 (R1) tires. The 3430 and 2330 run those tires at 160 kPa (23 psi). The 2280 and 3380 run them at 140 kPa (20 psi). The caster wheels use a different spec: 160 Nm (120 lb ft), 8 bolt. The caster tire is a 22.5L x 16.1 (R3) ST II at 150 kPa (22 psi). p. 205
Why does my air cart fan run slow or hydraulic oil get hot?
The Hydraulic systems troubleshooting table lists the hot oil causes in this order. Insufficient oil cooling: review fan drive requirements. Cooling radiator too small: increase cooling capacity. No cooling radiator: add cooling capacity. Oil reservoir too small: increase reservoir size. Oil bypass rate very high: reduce bypass rate and increase fan speed. Low hydraulic fluid level in the tractor: maintain adequate oil levels. For low hydraulic pressure, the table lists tractor hydraulics not engaged and fan speed too low. It also lists the fan rotating in the wrong direction. p. 125
Which alternator should a dual fan Precision Air cart have?
Dual fan carts, serial number YCS000000 and above, should have the 100 A alternator. Single fan carts still use the 60 A unit. Viewed from the back, the positive post is on the left side on the 100 A and on the right side on the 60 A. The Alternator and external lighting section covers identification, alternator service and lighting checks. p. 433
