When the loader goes soft or the charging light stays on, the clock you are racing is the weather, and this Ford 1710 repair manual PDF is the fix: factory publication 40131020, 556 pages covering four compact diesel tractors from the 1310 through the 1710 Offset. Hydraulic circuits take nearly a fifth of the book: schematics tracing oil from pump to lift cylinder, plus pressure tests that tell you whether the pump or the control valve is letting the three-point hitch bleed down. Wiring diagrams map the glow plug, starting, and charging circuits, and the Offset gets its own procedures for fuel, electrical, PTO, and steering. Torque connecting rod caps to 21.6-25.2 lbs.-ft. and flywheel bolts to 43.4-50.6 lbs.-ft., straight from the factory tables. A tractor parked over a mystery is hay standing uncut. Bookmarked and text-searchable, the PDF jumps you to the right page in seconds; download it and keep the season on schedule.

Ford 1310, 1510, 1710, 1710 Offset Common Problems This Manual Covers

PTO shaft keeps turning with the clutch pedal pushed all the way to the floor

Check the second-stage linkage adjustment on the double clutch before pulling anything apart. If the PTO stage still drags, split the tractor and inspect the PTO disc for rust bonding it to the flywheel, common after outdoor storage. Free the disc, dress the friction surfaces, and torque the clutch mounting bolts to 18-25 lbs.-ft. on reassembly, per page 229.

Manual Section: Clutches p. 229
Engine runs hot under load, coolant pushing out the overflow after an hour of mowing

Check water pump belt tension first; deflection should be 7/16 to 9/16 inch (10 to 15 mm) at mid-span, the spec on page 92. A loose belt slips under load and stops moving coolant. Blow the chaff out of the radiator core, then work the overheating chart starting to rule out a stuck thermostat.

Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting
Engine cranks but will not start after sitting all winter, white smoke from the exhaust

Drain the stale fuel, replace the filter, and bleed air through to the injectors before extended cranking. Crack each injector line to confirm delivery; a dry line points to the injection pump. Pull and pop-test the injectors against the 1706 PSI opening pressure spec on page 127, and clean any nozzle with a distorted spray pattern.

Manual Section: Fuel System Troubleshooting p. 127

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you fix ford 1710 rear hydraulics will not lift, three-point hitch and loader both dead after warmup?

Check the reservoir oil level first; low oil starves the lift pump and power steering together. Work the implement-fails-to-lift chart and test system relief pressure; it should hold 2130 PSI, the spec on page 356. If pressure comes up low, inspect the suction line for air leaks and replace hardened O-rings before condemning the pump. p. 356

How do you fix engine cranks but will not start after sitting all winter, white smoke from the exhaust?

Drain the stale fuel, replace the filter, and bleed air through to the injectors before extended cranking. Crack each injector line to confirm delivery; a dry line points to the injection pump. Pull and pop-test the injectors against the 1706 PSI opening pressure spec on page 127, and clean any nozzle with a distorted spray pattern. p. 127

How do you fix tractor will not move in any gear, clutch pedal feels loose with excessive free play?

Adjust pedal free play at the clutch linkage before splitting the tractor; excess free play keeps the clutch from releasing fully. If adjustment does not restore drive, split the tractor and measure the disc against the 0.1259 in. (3.2 mm) facing thickness spec on page 228. Check disc deflection too; maximum is 0.039 in. (1.0 mm). p. 228
