Part of the JCB Repair Manuals.
This is JCB Service Manual publication 9803-4160-17 for the 426, 435, 436 and 446 wheeled loading shovels. It covers the loader valve, WG powershift transmissions, axles, brakes, steering and the Perkins and Cummins engines.
Many figures change by model and serial range, so check your plate against the identification section first. The 435 is only covered by the 435S Tier 4 electrical schematics.

JCB 426, 435, 436, 446 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Lack of power in all hydraulic functions
Start with the fluid. Check the tank level, look for leaks and top up if it is low. If the level is right, check the pump control setting and adjust it. Then check whether the priority valve is sticking. The Hydraulic Fault Finding and Tests section gives the checks in order, with flow and pressure tests to confirm the cause.
Manual Section: Hydraulic fault finding p. 867One hydraulic service fails to operate or is slow to operate
Check the service pipe lines feeding that one function first, and replace any leaking hose. If the lines are dry, check the ARV setting and adjust it. If the ARV is right, the ram for that service is leaking and needs new seals. The ram work is covered in Pumps, Rams and Valves.
Manual Section: Hydraulic fault finding p. 867Engine tends to stall when the hydraulics are under load
If the engine stalls when the hydraulics are under load, suspect the pump control setting first. Check it and adjust it, using the flow and pressure tests in Hydraulic Fault Finding and Tests. If the setting is correct, use the Engine section troubleshooting to check engine performance.
Manual Section: Hydraulic fault finding p. 867All drive and gear selection status lights have failed
Check fuses 100 and 101 in locations A4 and C3. Replace any blown fuse and check the lights again. If they are still off, check for battery voltage at the PR78 A connector. If there is voltage at the connector, replace PR78 A. The transmission fault finding pages in Transmission Testing and Error Codes give the full sequence.

Does this manual cover my JCB 426, 435, 436 or 446 wheel loader?
This is publication 9803-4160-17 for the 426, 435, 436 and 446 wheeled loading shovels. The introduction lists the 426 from serial number 531001 and the 435 and 436 from 533001. The 446 is listed from 540000 to 540011. The 436 information also applies to the 446 unless the manual says otherwise. Many sections are split by serial range, such as 426 from 532100 and 436 from 533692. The 435 appears only in the 435S Tier 4 electrical schematics. There are no separate 435 engine or hydraulic data tables. p. 6
What are the JCB 426 and 436 fluid capacities?
On the 426 from 532500, engine oil is 14 litres (3.1 UK gal) of JCB Extreme Performance Engine Oil 15W/40. The hydraulic system takes 210 litres (46.2 UK gal) of JCB HP Hydraulic Fluid ISO VG46. The cooling system holds 35 litres (7.7 UK gal) and fuel 230 litres (50.6 UK gal). The 436 from 533692 takes 16 litres (3.5 UK gal) of engine oil. Its gearbox takes 34 litres (7.5 UK gal) of JCB HP Universal ATF. The 446 hydraulic tank holds 173 litres (38.0 UK gal, 45.8 US gal). p. 86
What are the JCB 436 and 446 hydraulic and steering relief pressures?
On the 436 and 446, system control pressure at the main pump relief valve is 245 - 255 bar (3552 - 3697 lbf/in2). Primary pump full flow at 2200 rev/min is 156 litres/min (34.3 UK gal/min, 41.2 US gal/min). Steer relief pressure at the ram is 175 bar (2537.5 lbf/in2). The brake section gives a service brake operating pressure of 80 bar (1160 lbf/in2) and a cut-out of 200 bar (2900 lbf/in2). p. 761
Which engine and transmission does each JCB 426, 436 and 446 have?
Early 426 and 436 machines use the Perkins 1006-6T7 and 1006-6T4, rated at 93kW and 122kW at 2200 rev/min. The 446 has the Cummins C Series 6CT 8.3 - 170, making 170 hp at 2200 rpm. The 426 from 532500 uses the New BTAA 5.9 - C Tier 2, rated at 150 hp (112 Kw). The 436 from 534200 makes 173 hp (129 Kw). The 426 has the WG-150 transmission, and the 436 and 446 have the WG-200. p. 1347
Does the manual include electrical and hydraulic schematics and fault finding?
Yes. Electrical schematic circuits are split by serial range for the 426, 436 and 446, later 426 and 436 machines and the 435S Tier 4. Harness drawings and connector identification pages go with them. Hydraulic schematic circuits cover 4-ram, Smoothshift and Tier II loaders. There is fault finding for the hydraulics, transmission, air conditioning and engine, and the transmission pages include ZF error codes. p. 452
