Part of the Case IH Repair Manuals.
The hitch drops a plough halfway through a headland turn, or the powershift starts picking the wrong range with a field still to cut. This is the Case IH service manual for the CX50, CX60, CX70, CX80, CX90 and CX100. It covers the late 1990s tractors with the 16x8 synchro shuttle box, two-speed powershift, dry single plate clutch and wet disc brakes.
It starts with fluids and capacities. From there it covers engine removal, the cooling system, electrical schematics, steering, the clutch, powershift and PTO, rear axles, brakes, hydraulics and cab work. The electronic hitch section carries both code charts and circuit testing.
When it is just you and the tractor in the shed after dark, there is nobody to ring. Keep it on your phone or print the section you need, and it goes wherever the tractor is parked.

Case IH CX50–CX100 Series Common Problems This Manual Covers
Tractor creeps in neutral, will not go into reverse, or the powershift sits in the wrong range
Rule out the electrical side before you pull anything apart. Use the Electrical Schematics and Fuse Location and Identification pages to trace the powershift solenoid feeds, the relays, and the clutch and forward-position switches. Corroded plugs and a dirty electrical panel cause plenty of these faults. If power is reaching the solenoids, move on to the Powershift chapter in the Transmission section.
Manual Section: Electrical: Electrical Schematics / Transmission: Powershift p. 84Three-point hitch or remotes will not raise or lower
Check the oil level and condition first, since the hitch runs on the shared transmission oil. Then work through Hydraulic Troubleshooting and Schematics to rule out a blocked filter, the main hydraulic pump and the relief valve. A remote lever left in a working position can divert flow. If the hydraulics check out, test the hitch valve solenoids and wiring under Controller Systems.
Manual Section: Hydraulics: Hydraulic Troubleshooting and Schematics, Hitch Valve p. 733Hydraulics work fine cold but go weak when warm, and implements drift down
That pattern points to internal leakage that gets worse as the oil thins. The Hydraulics section covers the Main Hydraulic Pump, Remote Valves and Hitch Valve, with schematics to isolate which circuit is bleeding off. Raise an implement, watch which function drops first, then test that branch. Worn pumps and tired cylinder seals are the usual culprits.
Manual Section: Hydraulics: Main Hydraulic Pump, Remote Valves, Hitch Valve p. 734Engine temperature climbs under load or the engine overheats
Start outside the engine. Blow out the radiator and cooling package, check the fan and belt, and confirm the coolant level and the 55/45 water to glycol mix. Chaff-packed cores are the usual cause at harvest, and ignoring them can cost you a head gasket. Once the obvious checks pass, go to Filling the Cooling System in the Engine section.
Manual Section: Engine: Filling the Cooling System p. 72Frequently Asked Questions
The hitch will not lift and the display is showing a code. Does the manual cover that?
Yes. The Controller Systems section has the Calibration Error Code Chart and the Hitch System Performance Code Chart for the codes on the diagnostic display. Circuit Testing walks you through the harness checks. A raise or lower solenoid coil should read 5 to 10 ohms, so a meter quickly tells you if a coil is open. After the repair, Electronic Hitch Calibration sets the hitch up to the tractor again. p. 830
My clutch is slipping or the pedal feels wrong. Where do I start?
Check the adjustment before you think about splitting the tractor. Chassis and Mounted Equipment covers clutch pedal and lever adjustments. The clutch master cylinder rod needs 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) of free travel. If the disc is worn or oil-soaked, the Transmission section covers Separating the Tractor and the Engine Clutch. p. 884
Which oil goes in the transmission and hydraulics, and how much?
Both run on Case HY-TRAN PLUS. A refill takes approximately 34.5 litres on a 2WD tractor and 37.0 litres with MFD. The Lubricants and Capacities chart in the General section lists every fill point. Low or dirty oil here causes a lot of hitch and remote complaints, so check it before chasing parts. p. 11
Does it include a full engine overhaul?
No, and better you know that before you buy. The Engine section explains how the engine works and gives the general engine specifications table, including injection pump, pump timing, compression ratio and valve clearance for each model. It also covers engine removal and installation and filling the cooling system. Internal rebuild procedures are not in this book. p. 50
What engine oil and coolant does it take?
Case No.1 Engine Oil. With a filter change, the CX50 and CX60 take 7.5 litres (1.98 US gal). The CX70 to CX100 take 8.5 litres (2.25 US gal) with a turbocharger and 8.2 litres (2.16 US gal) without. Coolant is 55% water to 45% ethylene glycol, and the CX70 to CX100 hold 13.7 litres (3.62 US gal). The fuel tank holds 155 litres (41 US gal). p. 11
