The rear remote won't come back to center, the cab is blowing warm air, and the seed tender is waiting at the field edge. This is the factory Case IH service manual, CNH part number 47488213, dated March 2013. It covers Steiger 350 through 600 wheeled tractors and Quadtrac 450 through 600 track tractors, PIN ZCF100001 and above and ZDF100001 and above.

It includes the PS4 and PS6 powershift pressure tests with worksheets, PFC pump standby settings, SCR exhaust treatment, EHR remote valves, harnesses and connectors, and fault codes with step-by-step checks. At 10 at night it's just you and a stalled tractor in the shed, with nobody to call. This book has the answers.

Sections are numbered by system: engine 10, transmission 21, hydraulics 35 and electrical 55. Go straight to the one you need and get back in the field before the weather turns.

Case IH Steiger 350–600, Quadtrac 450–600 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Fault code 4112: rear remote valve will not return to neutral

If a remote valve section was replaced recently, check the tie bolt torque first, because over-torqued tie bolts are a listed cause. They must be 47 - 52 N·m (35 - 38 lb ft). Next check for other EHR error codes, then check the system oil for contamination. The other failure modes are a spool stuck by contamination and a faulty EHR valve. Change hydraulic fluid and filters on the operator manual schedule, because poor maintenance can make valve spools stick.

Manual Section: Electrical systems - FAULT CODES - 4112-Rear remote no.1 - unable to reach neutral p. 4188
Powershift transmission shows low pressure in certain gears only

A sticking solenoid valve can cause this. Main pressure should read 18.6 - 20.7 bar (270 - 300 psi) at 1000 RPM. Use the Engaged Clutch Pack table to find the clutch that all the low gears share. For example, low readings only in 2, 7, 8 and 14 point to clutch 1M/solenoid Y. Clean the range selector valve area thoroughly. Then fit a new solenoid, or swap in one that is working correctly. Drive the tractor and record pressures in every gear, forward and reverse. If the problem moves with the solenoid, replace it. If nothing changes, swap the solenoids back and run the transmission clutch pressure test.

Manual Section: Transmission - Powershift transmission - Pressure test - Solenoid swap test p. 297
Air conditioning blows only slightly cool

Suspect a high side flow restriction. It is most likely between the receiver/drier and the thermal expansion valve, or inside the receiver/drier itself. Look for frost or condensation on the receiver/drier and on the liquid line to it. Also check whether the low pressure switch is activating. Frost forms downstream of the restriction, so the frost line shows you where it is. Remove the restriction or replace the part.

Manual Section: Cab climate control - Air conditioning - Problem solving p. 2913
Tractor will not move: bottom of clutch pedal switch open circuit

The fault code means the bottom of clutch pedal switch circuit is open or the bottom of clutch relay is stuck open. Find clutch disconnect switch connector C626 on the center console, just to the left of the clutch pedal. Unplug it and measure pin A to pin B. You should read about 4.0 Ω with the pedal released and an open circuit with it pushed down. If you get any other reading, replace the switch. If the switch checks good, replace the bottom of clutch neutral relay with a known good one, erase the code and continue operation. The other suspects are the connector, switch adjustment and the TCU.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the engine oil capacity on the Steiger and Quadtrac 350-600?

On PIN ZDF and after, an oil change with filter takes about 25 l (6.6 US gal) on the Steiger 350 only. All other models and every Quadtrac take about 28 l (7.5 US gal). Coolant is 49 l (13 US gal) on the 350, 400 and 450. It is 70 l (18.4 US gal) on the 500, 550, 600 and all Quadtrac models. The capacities table for ZCF and before lists different engine oil figures, so check your PIN before you pour. p. 40

What torque do the wheel bolts take on a Steiger/Quadtrac dual wheel installation?

The manual gives it for the front duals. Hang the inner wheel on the axle with two wheel bolts, threads lubricated with SAE 10W-30 oil, and torque them to 530 - 570 N·m (391 - 420 lb ft). Line up the cutouts on the spacer with those two bolts. Fit the remaining eight bolts, lubricated the same way, and torque them to 922 - 962 N·m (680 - 709 lb ft). The outer wheel then goes on the spacer with ten wheel bolts. p. 2661

How do I clear a fault code on a Case IH Steiger?

Fault code 6004, rear diff lock switch failure, shows how the manual handles it. Clear the code with the approved diagnostic equipment, run the tractor under normal conditions and retest. If the code does not come back, the system is working. If it does, use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) in monitor mode to watch the switch operate. Possible causes are a bad switch, the harness/wiring or the tractor control unit (TCU). Contact ASIST before you replace a TCU. p. 4351

How much R134a refrigerant does the Steiger air conditioning take?

The R134a charge is 1.9 kg (4.2 lb) on all model tractors covered by this book. Section 50, Cab climate control, also has the air conditioning problem solving procedures, which help if the cab still won't cool after charging. p. 2842

What are the hydraulic pump standby pressures on the Steiger/Quadtrac 350-600?

The standard flow PFC piston pump (A10V071DFR series) is pressure/flow compensated with variable displacement. At 2000 engine RPM with no flow, low pressure standby is 45 - 50 bar (653 - 725 psi). High pressure standby at the same speed is 207 - 213 bar (3000 - 3090 psi). The 350 at 2000 RPM flows 151 l/min (40 US gpm) standard and 208 l/min (55 US gpm) high flow. The 400 to 600 at 2100 RPM flow 159 l/min (42 US gpm) standard and 216 l/min (57 US gpm) high flow. p. 2367
