John Deere 250G, 440G, 550GE, G2500K, G4400K, G5500K, G5500KE Common Problems This Manual Covers
John Deere 440G generator starts, runs about ten seconds, then dies with low oil light flashing
Check the oil level first; the 440G crankcase holds 1.42 L (48 U.S. oz.), and the low oil switch kills ignition well before the dipstick reads empty. If the level is correct, test the oil switch for continuity per page 161 with the float moved through its travel, and replace a switch that stays closed.
Manual Section: Engine Oil Switch Test p. 161Engine cranks strong but will not fire, or starts only after long cranking
Verify the fuel valve is open and the tank has fresh unleaded 87 octane gasoline; stale or watered fuel is the usual culprit. Drain the tank and carburetor bowl, refill, and work through the engine no-start chart starting on page 26. Pull the spark plug and check for fouling while you are in there.
Manual Section: Troubleshooting p. 26No voltage at either receptacle while the engine runs at full speed
Check the main breaker and press the GFCI reset first. Work through the electrical troubleshooting steps on page 153, then measure rotor and stator resistance per page 155. If residual magnetism is lost, flash the field (page 167). After brush work on a 250G, torque the end bell to 13.6 to 16.9 N•m (120 to 150 lb-in.).
Manual Section: Electrical Troubleshooting p. 153Engine runs but bogs down and lacks power when load is applied
Remove and inspect the air cleaner elements; a plugged filter starves these engines fast in dusty conditions. Drain any stale fuel and refill with fresh 87 octane unleaded. If power is still down, run a cylinder compression test and check valve clearance per page 29; intake clearance on the 250G should be 0.13 to 0.18 mm (0.005 to 0.007 in.).
Manual Section: Tests and Adjustments p. 29Excessive vibration at full speed, gets worse as the unit warms up
Tighten all engine and generator mounting hardware first; loose isolators cause most vibration complaints. Pull the blower housing and check the flywheel key and nut; removal is covered on page 30. If vibration persists, measure crankshaft end play with a dial indicator per page 46; the 250G spec is 0.05 to 0.30 mm (0.002 to 0.008 in.).
