Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
An hour from now you could have the injection pump timed to the same numbers Deere handed its dealers, because the John Deere 820 Technical Manual PDF (TM4212) puts all 332 pages of factory tractor service data in front of you. Wiring diagrams trace the Bilux and sealed beam lighting circuits, hydraulic schematics map the rockshaft and selective control valves, and troubleshooting tables walk each system from symptom to cause. Exploded views carry the collar-shift transmission, differential, final drives, and PTO shafts through teardown and reassembly. Set front wheel bolts to 85 ft.lbs., pull the front support cap screws to 170 ft.lbs., and hold impeller clearance within 0.005 in. A rockshaft that lets the hitch settle overnight stops being a guessing game once you have the pressure test values. Bookmarked and text searchable, this download is yours to keep for every season the 820 works your ground.

John Deere 820 Common Problems This Manual Covers
John Deere 820 starter just clunks and engine will not turn over after sitting all winter
Load test the battery and clean both cable ends and the ground strap before condemning the starter. Test the solenoid pull in; it needs 8 volts minimum. If you pull the starter apart, measure the commutator against the specs on page 187 and replace the armature below 1.555 in. (39.5 mm).
Manual Section: Electrical System p. 187Engine fires and runs about 10 seconds, then dies and repeats until the battery goes flat
Drain the sediment bowl, verify the fuel shutoff valve is fully open, and replace both fuel filters with a new housing gasket. Bleed the system and watch for air leaks at every fitting under the tank. If the nozzles come out for testing, torque them back into the cylinder head at 20 ft.lbs. per page 134.
Manual Section: Fuel System p. 134Severe lack of power, will not pull in higher gears, sluggish throttle response after injection pump work
Check the air intake first; nests and chaff choke this engine and can stick valves. Set valve clearance at 0.014 in. (0.35 mm) intake and 0.018 in. exhaust, hot or cold; the specification is on page 42. Then work the LACK OF ENGINE POWER chart on page 33, and recheck injection pump timing if the trouble started right after pump work.
Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting p. 33Three point hitch raises slowly or rockshaft will not lift the implement at all
Verify reservoir oil level and change the filter before anything else. Test system pressure at the pump outlet; it should hold 2000 psi (140 kg/cm2) as listed on page 7. If pressure comes up short, follow the diagnosing charts beginning on page 275 to isolate the pump, valves, or rockshaft before planting weather closes in.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 275Water pump leaking coolant from the weep hole, puddle forming under the front of the engine
Drain the cooling system and pull the pump off the engine. Replace the seal and bearing, then set impeller to cover clearance within 0.005 in. (0.12 mm) using the procedure on page 42. Torque the cover to the pump housing at 35 ft.lbs. (4.8 mkg) and the fan to the V-belt pulley at 20 ft.lbs. (2.75 mkg).
Manual Section: Engine p. 42Frequently Asked Questions
How do I bleed the fuel system on a John Deere 820?
To bleed the fuel system, loosen the bleed plug at the first-stage fuel filter and operate the fuel pump primer lever until fuel flows free of air bubbles. Tighten the plug and repeat the procedure for the second-stage filter. Finally, bleed the injection pump by loosening the bleed plug on the pump and turning the engine crankshaft if necessary until fuel flows without air. p. 105
What are the torque specifications for the cylinder head cap screws on a John Deere 820?
The torque specification for the cylinder head to cylinder block cap screws is 110 ft.lbs. (15 mkg). p. 44
What is the correct valve clearance for the John Deere 820 engine?
The valve clearance for both the intake and outlet valves, whether the engine is hot or cold, is 0.014 in. (0.35 mm) for the intake valve and 0.018 in. (0.45 mm) for the outlet valve. p. 6
What is the engine oil pressure for the John Deere 820 at 2100 rpm?
The engine oil pressure at 2100 rpm should be between 50 to 60 psi (3.5 to 4.2 kg/cm2). p. 18
What is the capacity of the cooling system for the John Deere 820?
The cooling system capacity for the John Deere 820 is 2.3 Imp. gallons (2.75 US gallons), which is equivalent to 10.5 liters. p. 79
