New Holland 5500, 6500, 7500 Common Problems This Manual Covers
New Holland 5500 cranks but will not start, engine fires briefly then dies
Check fuel filters first; a plugged element is the usual cause on these tractors. Replace both elements, then crack the injector lines and crank until fuel runs clear of air bubbles. Once it fires, low idle should settle at 650 RPM per page 26. Follow the engine troubleshooting steps if it still dies.

Check reservoir oil level and change the hydraulic filter before blaming the pump. Then flow test with oil warm: a healthy pump delivers 11.000 to 12.000 L/min at 1000 RPM and 166 bar, minimum 7.0 L/min per page 523. Verify relief settings too, 100 ± 5 bar cranking and 210 ± 5 bar sustain, on page 507.

Test charging voltage at the battery with the engine running; a good alternator holds 13.60 to 14.00 V, the setting listed on page 728. Below that, clean the ground connections and check belt tension, then torque the tension adjusting screw to 24 N·m (17.7 lb ft). Load test the battery before the next early morning start.
