Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
This is the complete John Deere factory diagnostic and repair manual (TM130419) for the 1550, 1570, 1575, 1580 and 1585 Series TerrainCut commercial front mowers, published April 2015. Across 1,780 pages it covers everything a dealer technician works from: rebuilding all four Yanmar diesel engine variants (3TNV80, 3TNV82A, 3TNV88, 3TNV88C), repairing the hydrostatic pump and hydraulic wheel drive power train in both single-speed and dual-speed configurations, tracing electrical faults using full wiring schematics, and reading out DTC codes from the PDU, VCU and ECU controllers. It also covers hydraulic repair with test pressures, steering and brake service, cutting unit and snowblower attachment overhaul, cab repair and HVAC service - every capacity and torque spec is called out so the repair is done to spec the first time.

John Deere 1550-1585 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Complete loss of drive or transmission slipping under load
Start by checking the transmission oil level and condition using the John Deere High Viscosity HY-GARD (J20C) spec. A blocked transmission oil filter (part M146082) starves the hydrostatic system of pressure and is the leading cause of drive failure. Section 240 covers the hydraulic pressure test procedure for both single-speed and dual-speed configurations so you can confirm whether the fault is a clogged filter, a failed pump, or a worn wheel motor before pulling components.
Manual Section: Power Train Operation, Tests and Adjustments (Section 240)Engine fails to start or runs rough with intermittent power loss
On the Yanmar engines used in these mowers, no-start or rough running most commonly traces to a clogged engine oil filter (M806418 on the 1550; M806419 on the 1570/1575/1580/1585) or contaminated fuel. Section 220 walks through the fuel system diagnosis for each engine variant, covering injection nozzle testing and fuel shutoff solenoid checks. Confirm the oil filter service interval has not been exceeded before moving to injection system diagnostics.
Manual Section: Engine Operation, Tests and Adjustments (Section 220)Controller DTC codes appear and machine enters reduced-function or limp mode
Retrieve the active DTC from the ECU, VCU or PDU using the diagnostic procedure in Section 235. Cross-reference the code number against the ECU code groups (000001-529999) to identify the affected circuit. Use the Section 230 wiring schematics to verify harness integrity at the relevant connector before replacing any module. Many apparent controller faults clear after fixing a harness chafe or a corroded ground connection at the frame.
Manual Section: Electrical and Controllers (Sections 230/235)Cutting unit makes unusual noise or fails to cut evenly across the deck
Uneven cut usually points to a worn or damaged blade spindle bearing, a blade that has struck an object and is out of balance, or a stretched deck drive belt. Section 70 Group 10 covers the cutting unit disassembly, spindle bearing inspection and blade replacement. Inspect blade tip speed balance after installation. If the cutting unit hydraulic motor is the source of noise, test the motor supply pressure per Section 250 before removing the unit.
Manual Section: Attachments Repair (Section 70)Frequently Asked Questions
What engine does each TerrainCut model use and how much oil does it take?
The 1550 uses a Yanmar 3TNV80 with a 3.1 L (3.3 qt) fill including filter. The 1570/1575 Worldwide uses a 3TNV82A at the same 3.1 L fill. The 1570/1575 North America uses a 3TNV88C at 4.1 L (4.3 qt). The 1580 and 1585 run either a 3TNV88 or 3TNV88C depending on market, with a 4.8 L (5.1 qt) fill. All four engines are covered in the manual's engine repair and diagnosis sections.
How do I read DTC error codes on a John Deere 1580 or 1585?
The ECU, VCU and PDU controllers each generate their own DTC codes. Section 235 covers the full DTC list from code 000001 through 529999, organized by controller. The Section 230 electrical schematics show the pin-level wiring for each controller so you can check harness continuity before condemning a module. For DPF-related codes, Section 235 Group 15 covers DPF functions specifically.
Why does the mower deck fail to engage or the blades stop rotating?
On these machines the cutting unit is hydraulically driven. Section 250 (Hydraulics Operation, Tests and Adjustments) covers the deck engagement valve and system pressure tests. Section 270 covers the cutting unit attachment diagnosis. If the drive belt is slipping rather than a hydraulic fault, Section 70 has the belt replacement procedure. Check system pressure first before replacing the valve.
What transmission oil does the TerrainCut use and how much?
All models use John Deere High Viscosity HY-GARD (J20C) only - do not use Type F automatic transmission fluid or mix oil types. Capacity is 8.5 L (9 qt) for 2WD, 8.7 L (9.2 qt) for 1550 and 1575 in 4WD, and 10.0 L (10.5 qt) for the 1575, 1580 and 1585. The filter change interval is covered in the maintenance schedule within Section 10.
Does this manual cover both Tier 4 and older non-Tier 4 TerrainCut machines?
Yes. Section 230 splits into Group 10 (Theory of Operation, Non-T4) and Group 15 (Theory of Operation, Tier 4), so both emissions variants are covered in the same document. If you are not sure which tier your machine is, check the engine serial number plate on top of the valve cover and match the 3TNV engine code to the appropriate repair group in Section 20.
