An hour from now you could have this John Deere 335 technical manual PDF open on the bench, tracing why the twine arm quit mid-windrow. TM1472 covers five round baler models, 426 pages of diagnosis and repair from pickup to gate. Hydraulic schematics walk the oil from the tractor remotes through the tensioning and Hydra-Selector valves on the 335, 375 and 385, then through the single spool valve on the 435 and 535. Electrical diagrams and diagnostic charts trace the automatic twine wrap and both surface wrap systems, serial number break included. Check the 540 RPM drive slip clutch spring at 35 mm (1-3/8 in.), and torque shear bolts to 18 N-m (13 lb-ft). A guessed torque snaps shear bolts with hay on the ground. Buy it once and this bookmarked, keyword-searchable PDF stays with your baler for as long as you run it.

John Deere 335–535 Common Problems This Manual Covers

John Deere 535 round baler twine arms stall partway across the bale and will not return home

Check the twine pump latch and bellcrank for full re-latch after the gate closes; clean and oil stiff linkage and replace any missing springs. Work through the twine wrap diagnosis in the Twine Mechanism section starting on page 177. If you open the cylinder, torque the piston rod lock nut to 41 to 48 N-m (30 to 35 lb-ft).

Manual Section: Twine Mechanism p. 177
Hydraulic oil runs hot and twine pump keeps pumping after the bale is ejected and gate closes

Verify the twine pump drive latched after ejection and the control spool returned to neutral before you condemn the pump. Free the spool and linkage, then run the hydraulic diagnosis starting on page 111. On 435 and 535 balers, test the low pressure relief valve at 5171 kPa (750 psi) from the specs on page 147.

Manual Section: Hydraulics p. 111
Forming belts slip and rub the side sheets, bales come out soft, lopsided, or undersized

Measure belt length before you blame tension: on 435 and 535 balers, replace any belt stretched past 13487 mm (531.0 in.), listed on page 403. Inspect splices for hooked or broken lacing, then check tension arm springs and rollers for rust and wear before the next cutting is ready to bale.

Manual Section: Miscellaneous p. 403
Net wrap sticks to belt rollers and knife will not cut the wrap cleanly

Clean rust off the belt rollers and clear chaff out of the wrap path so the net cannot grab. Remove and sharpen or replace the knife, torque the knife mounting nuts to 55 N·m (40 lb-ft), and set the knife stop at 21 mm (13/16 in.) using the surface wrap specs on page 271.

Manual Section: Surface Wrap System (Serial No. 880001- ) p. 271
Shear bolts break every few bales and slip clutch slips in heavy windrows

Check the slip clutch springs before you buy another box of shear bolts. On 435 and 535 drives, set the 540 RPM clutch springs to 35 mm (1-3/8 in.) compressed length, from the specs on page 35, and replace glazed clutch plates. Fit only correct-grade shear bolts, never hardened substitutes, and recheck after the first field.

Manual Section: Drive Train p. 35

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the torque specifications for the 335, 375, and 385 baler shear bolt?

The shear bolt for the 335, 375, and 385 balers should be tightened to a torque of 18 N-m (13 lb-ft). p. 35

What is the procedure for checking the twine pump pressure on a 435 or 535 baler?

Place a pressure gauge in the output line (A) of the pump. With the oil warm and the baler running at rated PTO speed with the twine arm in the home position, the pressure should read 6900 kPa (1000 psi) for serial numbers up to 985275 (435) or 986059 (535), and 8619 kPa (1250 psi) for later serial numbers. p. 202

What are the replacement specifications for the forming belts on a 335 round baler?

The 335 round baler uses 6 forming belts, each 7 inches (178 mm) wide. The lengths are (2) 402.75 inches (10230 mm) and (4) 410.24 inches (10420 mm). p. 15

What is the correct rolling torque for the input shaft on a John Deere 335, 375, 385, 435, 535 gear case without seals?

The rolling torque for the input shaft on a gear case (cast iron case) without seals is 0.19 to 0.59 N-m (1.7 to 5.2 lb-in.). p. 45

How do I adjust the pickup drive chain on the baler?

To adjust the pickup drive chain, loosen the idler (A) and press it against the chain with 2.3 to 4.5 kg (5 to 10 lb) of pressure to achieve 13 mm (1/2 in.) of deflection. Tighten the idler cap screw to 163 N-m (120 lb-ft). p. 359

Is this John Deere 335 manual a PDF I download?

A single searchable PDF file of 426 pages, downloadable right after payment. Nothing ships, nothing waits in the mail.

Does this John Deere 335 manual allow printing?

You can. The PDF is unlocked and carries no copy protection, so print the sections you want and keep the file as your backup.
