Check stripper adjustment first and reset it for 3 mm (1/8 in.) clearance between stripper and auger. In short crop, install the deflector shield. The Auger Problems chart on page 97 lists both causes.

A slipping clutch or worn clutch disks let the auger stall under load. Adjust the slip clutch, and replace the disks if they are worn excessively. Slip clutch inspection and installation follow in the Repair Auger group.

Heavy, long-stem crop is the usual cause of wrapping at the middle of the auger. The Auger Problems chart on page 97 gives one fix for it: remove the rubber auger paddles.

Lower the reel until it barely clears the cutterbar and deck. In light crop, rotate the reel cam for late release. Raise ground speed if it is too slow, adjust the forming deflector, and replace worn knives or guards.

In rocky fields, raise the cutterbar using the gauge shoes and by reducing guard angle. Adjust the platform float springs and hold-downs, replace bent or broken guards, and raise the reel if the teeth reach into the knife. Slow down if ground speed is too fast.

Straighten a bent knife and reset the guards. Tighten the knife drive case mounting bolts, tighten or replace a loose or worn knife head pin and check its bushing, and tighten the nut securing the drive arm to the knife drive case.
