John Deere 316, 318, 420 Common Problems This Manual Covers
John Deere 318 creeps forward in neutral, hydrostatic lever centered, machine moves on level ground
Remove the belly screen and rear access cover to reach the neutral return linkage. Measure the detent spring and adjust to 50 mm (1.970 in.) per page 371 so the roller seats snugly against the inside plate. Adjust the turnbuckle until creep stops, then hold it and tighten the lock nuts to 33 N-m (24 lb-ft).
Manual Section: Power Train Diagnosis, Tests and Adjustments p. 371Engine oil level keeps dropping below the ADD mark between mowing sessions, no visible puddles
Check the oil with the machine cold and level; keep it between the ADD and FULL marks. Inspect the crankcase, filter base, and drain plug for leaks following the checkout on page 267. Drain and refill with 1.4 L (1.5 U.S. qt) without a filter change, then recheck after ten minutes of running.
Manual Section: Engine, Fuel and Air System Checkout p. 267Engine cranks but won't start, or fires and dies after a few seconds
Pull the plug and check for spark while cranking. Clean or replace it and set the gap to 0.64 mm (0.025 in.) as specced on page 37. Test fuel delivery next; the pump must hold at least 12 kPa (1.7 psi). Work through the no-start diagnosis starting if spark and fuel both check good.
Manual Section: Engine, Fuel and Air System Diagnosis, Tests and AdjustmentsElectric PTO clutch won't engage, mower deck blades stay stopped with switch on
Verify the seat switch and PTO switch first; a bad seat switch kills the clutch circuit. Measure armature-to-rotor clearance with a feeler gauge and set it to 0.46 mm (0.018 in.). If you pull the clutch for replacement, torque the crankshaft cap screw to 47 N-m (35 lb-ft) shown on page 27.
Manual Section: Electrical Repair p. 27Front tires scrub and wear unevenly, steering wanders side to side on straight level runs
Set the machine on level ground with wheels straight ahead. Measure between tire centerlines at the front and rear of the axle; set toe-in to 4.8 mm (3/16 in.) using the spec on page 29. Adjust the tie rod ends evenly, tighten the jam nuts, and inspect pivot bushings for slop while you're under there.
Manual Section: Miscellaneous Repair p. 29Frequently Asked Questions
