Mechanical front wheel drive, clutch operating linkages and transmission shift linkage make up the toughest work in TM-1220, the 772-page John Deere 2940 technical manual PDF for this tractor, and the book widens out from there to engine, fuel, electrical, steering and brakes, hydraulics, front axle and the operator's station. Wiring diagrams trace the electrical system's controls and instruments, while hydraulic schematics lay out the oil reservoir, filter, valves, oil cooler and rockshaft. Tune-up, lubrication and service, tractor separation and the Sound Gard body with its air conditioning system each get their own coverage. Fill the transmission-hydraulic system with 68 liters (18.0 U.S. gals.) on an initial fill, or 60 liters (15.9 U.S. gals.) at an oil change. Ordering a fuel transfer pump or fuel filter for your 2940? Every page prints cleanly, so you can mark up a working copy of the rockshaft or clutch linkage pages while the bookmarked PDF stays on your computer.

John Deere 2940 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Fuel system with air or water in the lines, engine hard to start or stalls frequently

Check the fuel filter for clogging and the fuel lines for restriction, then bleed the system. Loosen the union nut on at least two injection nozzle pressure lines by one turn, never more, and crank until fuel flows without air, per page 200. Relieve all pressure before disconnecting lines; escaping diesel fuel under pressure can penetrate skin (page 200). Hold the line male union when retightening.

Manual Section: Fuel System Diagnosing Malfunctions p. 185
Independent PTO with too little or no oil pressure, shaft keeps turning with lever disengaged

Test PTO oil pressure first and compare the reading to the specified value. Before fitting the test gauge, relieve all pressure and make sure all connections are tight (page 575). If pressure is low, or the PTO shaft still rotates with the control lever in the disengaged position, do not put the PTO shaft under load until the fault is fixed, as page 435 warns.

Manual Section: Independent PTO Diagnosing Malfunctions
Hydraulic lines, pipes or hoses weeping oil at the connections, leak hard to pinpoint

Shut the engine off before checking lines near moving parts, and relieve all pressure before disconnecting anything (page 575). Search for the leak with a piece of cardboard or wood, never your hands; escaping oil can penetrate skin (page 70). Tighten connections and replace damaged lines before applying pressure, then check transmission-hydraulic oil level; a full oil change takes 60 liters (15.9 U.S. gals.), page 10.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the torque specifications for the John Deere 2940 cylinder head cap screws?

The cylinder head cap screws should be tightened in the sequence shown in Figure 17 to a torque of 130 N-m (95 ft-lb). p. 113

What are the torque specifications for the front wheel rim to hub bolts on a John Deere 2940?

For tractors without MFWD, the torque is 180 N-m (130 ft-lbs). For tractors with MFWD, the torque is 300 N-m (220 ft-lbs). p. 11

How do you fix John Deere 2940 cooling system with dirty radiator core and side screens, engine running hot and overheating?

Check coolant level first, then clean the radiator core and side screens. Measure fan belt flex against 19 mm (0.75 in.) per page 11. Test the radiator cap: the high pressure valve should open at 40 to 50 kPa (6 to 7 psi), page 13. Verify thermostats open at 82°C (180°F), page 48; if in doubt, replace them. p. 99

How do you fix starter circuit with empty batteries or bad connections, engine will not crank at the key?

Check battery charge first, then clean and tighten every battery connection. Test the main switch and the start safety switch next; a bad safety switch stops cranking just like a dead battery. Only then suspect the starter solenoid, and finally the starter itself, as listed on page 98. p. 98

What exactly do I receive with this John Deere 2940 Technical Manual?

All 772 pages arrive as one searchable PDF at checkout. Read it at the desk, then take the phone out to the machine.

Is this John Deere 2940 manual print-friendly?

Yes. Print the pages you need for the job in your own shop, and bin them when they get greasy.

Can I find hydraulic circuit diagrams in this John Deere 2940 manual?

Included. A hydraulic system diagram shows the main hydraulic layout for the John Deere 2940. See page 571 for an example.
