Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
Engine, fuel, electrical, power train, hydraulics, steering and brakes, front axles, air conditioning and heating: John Deere TM1057 takes the 4430 tractor through each system end to end over 688 pages, all reproduced in this John Deere 4430 technical manual PDF. Wiring diagrams trace the Delcotron charging circuit, the Delco-Remy and John Deere starting circuits, and the lighting and accessory circuits, while hydraulic schematics follow oil through the reservoir, filters, valves, oil cooler and pumps. Power train coverage runs from the Perma-Clutch through Syncro-Range, Quad-Range and Power Shift transmissions to the differential, final drives and PTO. With clean filters at full load, expect 11 in. of water at 2200 rpm on tractors without extension. The ceiling is 25 in. of water. When you refit the cylinder head, the cap screws take 130 ft-lbs, tightened in sequence. Bookmarks and a searchable text layer take you to the selective control valve and remote cylinder pages in seconds.

John Deere 4430 Common Problems This Manual Covers
John Deere 4430 six-cylinder turbo diesel engine will not start when you hit the key
Check that fuel is not shut off at the tank, then look for a plugged fuel filter, foreign matter in the fuel, improper fuel and a restricted air intake, per the chart on page 34. Inspect battery terminals and grounds for corrosion or looseness and test for a weak battery following page 139. Keep sparks and flames away from the batteries, and make the last booster connection away from the battery (page 108).
Manual Section: Engine Malfunctions p. 34Engine lacks power under load and blows black or gray exhaust smoke
Measure air intake restriction at 2200 rpm under full load. Clean elements read 11 in. of water without the extension or 10 1/2 in. with it, and the maximum permitted is 25 in. (page 15). Service dirty air cleaners, replace plugged fuel filters, then check the fuel tank vent, restricted exhaust, injection nozzles and turbocharger listed on pages 34 and 35.
Manual Section: Engine Malfunctions p. 34Engine overheats with the temperature gauge reading high during heavy field work
Check coolant level and crankcase oil level first, then clean the radiator and side grille screens. Inspect for a loose or broken fan belt, faulty thermostats, a defective radiator pressure cap, a limed-up cooling system or a faulty water pump, as the chart on page 35 lists. Verify the engine is not overloaded and that injection pump timing is correct.
Manual Section: Engine Malfunctions p. 35Engine oil pressure reads low on the instrument cluster gauge once the tractor warms up
Check crankcase oil level and verify the correct oil before tearing anything down. Test the oil pressure sending unit and indicator lamp, since page 35 lists both as electrical causes. Then inspect regulating valve adjustment, the engine oil cooler, the oil pump, and main and connecting rod bearing clearance. Torque main bearing caps to 150 ft-lbs on reassembly (page 50).
Manual Section: Engine Malfunctions p. 35Hydraulic functions respond slowly, or the system shows no hydraulic oil pressure at all
Check pump standby pressure against 2200 to 2300 psi for the 3.0 cu. in. pump or 2300 to 2400 psi for the 4.0 cu. in. pump (page 451). Replace the filter when pressure differential reaches 50 psi (page 455). Relieve all pressure before disconnecting lines, tighten every connection before applying pressure, and shut the engine off before checking lines near moving parts (page 457).
Manual Section: Hydraulic System Diagnosis p. 457Pressure control valve will not adjust to spec when adding or removing shims
Add shims to increase or remove shims to decrease pressure, roughly 50 PSI per shim, following page 472. If the PCV still will not adjust, check for restriction at the PCV and body, try a second SCV if equipped, then inspect the pressure and return passages in the rockshaft housing. Relieve all pressure before disconnecting any lines (page 457).
Manual Section: Transmission Control System Diagnosis p. 472Frequently Asked Questions
How do I troubleshoot a John Deere 4430 that will not start?
If the tractor will not start, check for fuel system malfunctions such as foreign matter in fuel, improper fuel, a faulty fuel pump, or a plugged fuel filter. Also, check the electrical system for a corroded or loose battery or a weak battery as described in Section 40. p. 34
How do I adjust the clutch on a John Deere 4430?
To adjust the clutch, use the JDE-78 clutch adjusting tool. Tighten the three adjusting tool cap screws evenly to 30 in-lbs torque, then adjust the PTO clutch operating levers until the clearance between the end of the lever and the tool is no more than 0.010 inch. p. 294
What is the correct torque for the cylinder head cap screws on a John Deere 4430?
The cylinder head cap screws should be tightened evenly to 115 ft-lbs torque. After the engine has been run for one-half hour at 2100 rpm, they should be retightened to 125 to 135 ft-lbs torque. p. 40
What is the valve clearance specification for the John Deere 4430 engine?
The intake valve clearance is 0.018 inch and the exhaust valve clearance is 0.028 inch. p. 5
What is the engine crankcase oil capacity for the John Deere 4430?
The engine crankcase capacity, including the filter, is 17 U.S. quarts. p. 5
