Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
All 599 pages of this John Deere 444D, 544D, 644D Technical Manual PDF (OEM TM-1341) go to work on one job: diagnosing and fixing your loader like the factory built it. Inside: full wiring diagrams for the electrical system, hydraulic schematics covering the steering and loader control valve circuits, and page after page of operational checkout and troubleshooting procedures. You also get engine, power train, and heating and air conditioning test sections with diagnostic information for every system. Torque the wheel retainer cap screws to 410 ± 40 N·m (300 ± 30 lb-ft), then time the hydraulic pump performance check: 8.0 seconds for the 444D and 644D, 7.5 for the 544D. No more chasing wiring faults with a multimeter and a prayer. Bookmarked PDF that opens on any device; grab your tablet, walk to the loader, and start wrenching.

John Deere 444D, 544D, 644D Common Problems This Manual Covers
Engine loses power under load and blows black exhaust smoke at full throttle
Check the air restriction indicator on the outlet hose first; it trips when vacuum in the hose reaches 635 mm (25 in.) of water, explained on page 67. Replace both air cleaner elements if the red band shows. Then swap the primary and final fuel filters and confirm the transfer pump is delivering clean fuel.
Manual Section: Engine Malfunctions p. 67Driveline vibration gets worse with ground speed, clunking when shifting between forward and reverse
Inspect the lower U-joints and both upper and lower sliding joints for play; grab each shaft and feel for movement at the crosses. Grease the sliding joints and replace any joint with detectable looseness. While underneath, verify wheel retainer cap screws are torqued to 410 N·m (300 lb-ft), listed on page 29, since loose wheels mimic driveline vibration.
Manual Section: Drive Line Malfunctions p. 375Park brake will not hold the loader parked on a gradual slope
Check brake pedal free play before condemning the park brake; pedal effort must increase within about 13 mm (1/2 in.) of travel, per the checkout on page 419. No free play means the brakes never fully release and the drum overheats. Adjust the linkage, then retest on the same slope with the transmission in neutral.
Manual Section: Park Brake Malfunctions p. 419Frequently Asked Questions
What are the replacement specifications for air cleaner elements?
The air cleaner system uses a primary filter element and a safety element. The safety element (B) retains dust that would otherwise pass into the engine if the primary element should rupture, and it should only be removed for service when the primary element is removed. p. 66
What is the intake valve clearance for the 444D and 544D engines?
The intake valve clearance for the 444D and 544D engines is 0.36 mm (0.014 in). p. 109
How do you fix john Deere 644D transmission slips in all gears and loses power after hydraulic oil warms up?
Check transmission oil level and condition first; milky or aerated oil points to the wrong fill or a suction leak pulling in air. Test clutch pack pressures, then adjust the regulating valve shims covered on page 470; each quarter turn changes charge pressure 860 kPa (125 psi). Replace the transmission oil filter while the system is open. p. 470
How do you fix hydraulic oil foams in the reservoir and loader pump whines under load?
Check reservoir oil level with the boom down and top up before chasing anything else. Tighten every suction line clamp between the reservoir and pump; a loose fitting pulls in air you hear as pump whine. Then test return line pressure at the tank: anything over 345 kPa (50 psi) means a restriction downstream. p. 482
What do I get after purchasing this John Deere 444D manual?
Immediate download of the complete 599-page scanned Technical Manual. Access it on any device, from a laptop at your desk to a phone in the field.
Can I print this John Deere 444D manual?

Are there hydraulic schematics in this John Deere 444D manual?
A hydraulic system diagram for the John Deere 444D, 544D, 644D is included.
