This is the full technical repair manual for the John Deere X500, X520, X530, X534 and X540 lawn tractors, 2006 to 2015. It is not a diagnosis-only book: it takes you from theory of operation and testing all the way through complete teardown and rebuild of the engine, hydrostatic transaxle and power steering. Three complete engine sections are included - the Kawasaki FH721V air-cooled V-twin, the liquid-cooled John Deere FD731V, and the Kawasaki FS730V fitted to the X500 - each with its own specs, diagnostics and repair procedures. Electrical coverage runs schematics and harnesses for both serial number breaks, plus charging, starting, PTO clutch and instrument circuits. Wear limits, torque values and pressure test specs are printed where you need them.

John Deere X500 Select Series (X500-X540) Common Problems This Manual Covers

Engine down on power or hard to start

Start with a compression test from the correct engine section: minimum 390 kPa (57 psi) on the air-cooled FS730V and FH721V, with no more than 41 kPa between FS730V cylinders, versus 682 kPa (99 psi) on the liquid-cooled FD731V. Then check valve clearance against your engine's spec and fast idle speed. Each engine section carries full diagnostics through complete rebuild.

Manual Section: Engine (Sections 30, 30A, 30B) p. 41
PTO clutch will not engage, or charging and starting complaints

Section 40 gives pass/fail numbers instead of guesswork: PTO clutch coil resistance 2.8 to 3.3 ohms, stator output 28 V AC minimum at full throttle, starter draw 180 A maximum, battery 12 V Group 51 at 500 CCA. Schematics and harness layouts are printed for both serial number breaks, so trace the circuit that matches your machine.

Manual Section: Electrical (Section 40) p. 815
Mower deck lifts slowly or will not hold

Run the Section 60 oil flow and pressure check: deck lift in 2 seconds at 2700 to 3000 rpm, relief valve opening at 4480 kPa (650 psi). The result tells you whether the problem is pressure or the valve side, and the section then walks the relief valve, control valve, hoses and fittings repair.

Manual Section: Hydraulics (Section 60) p. 975
Loose front end, wandering steering, or weak brake

Section 50 covers tie rods and kingpins with proper torque values - kingpin bolts at 150 N.m (203 lb-ft), tie rod ball joint nuts at 60 N.m - plus the brake wear limit of 1.5 mm maximum clearance and pedal height settings. For the hydraulic steering itself, Section 70 adds the steering cylinder, hoses, column and a performance test.

Manual Section: Power Train (Section 50) and Steering (Section 70) p. 911

Frequently Asked Questions

Which engine section applies to my tractor?

Identify your engine before you order parts or set specs, because this book carries three complete engine sections and the numbers differ hard between them. The manual states the X500 runs the Kawasaki FS730V air-cooled twin, 726 cm3. Also covered in full are the Kawasaki FH721V air-cooled V-twin (675 cm3) and the John Deere K-Series FD731V, which is liquid cooled with a 2.7 L cooling system. Minimum compression is 390 kPa (57 psi) on the air-cooled engines but 682 kPa (99 psi) on the FD731V - test an FD731V against the air-cooled spec and you will pass a tired engine. Valve clearances differ too: 0.05 to 0.10 mm on the FS730V versus 0.15 mm on the FD731V. Check the engine model plate first, then open the right section. p. 320

What oil goes in the transaxle, and is it the same on every model?

No, and this is the expensive mistake to avoid. The X500 and X520 transaxle takes 10W30 engine oil. The X534 and X540 take John Deere Hy-Gard. Capacity is 5.3 L (5.6 qt) on all models. Put the wrong fluid in a hydrostatic transaxle and you are looking at whining, weak drive and eventually a rebuild that costs more than the manual by a couple orders of magnitude. The Power Train section also gives you the wear limits when you are in there - transaxle thrust bearing is 1.45 to 1.55 mm new, replace at 1.30 mm. p. 839

My mower deck lifts slowly. How do I tell if it is the pump or the valve?

The Hydraulics section (Section 60) has the exact check for this. Run the oil flow and pressure test: the deck should lift in 2 seconds at 2700 to 3000 engine rpm, and the relief valve should open at 4480 kPa, plus or minus 340 kPa (650 psi, plus or minus 50). Those two numbers split the problem for you: good pressure but slow lift points one way, low relief pressure points another. The section then covers the relief valve, control valve, hoses and fittings so you can fix whichever it turns out to be instead of throwing parts at it. p. 975

Are there error codes to read on an X520 or X530?

No. These are carburetted, cable-and-relay era machines - there is no ECU fault code table and no reset procedure to perform, so do not waste time hunting for one. Diagnosis on this platform is done the traditional way, and the manual gives you the numbers to do it: cylinder compression, engine oil pressure (minimum 69 kPa on the FH721V), stator AC output (28 V minimum at full throttle), starting motor draw (180 A maximum) and PTO clutch coil resistance (2.8 to 3.3 ohms). If the throttle or governed speed is off, that is a test and adjustment in the engine section - fast idle is 3600 rpm on the X500's FS730V and 3350 rpm on the FH721V and FD731V. p. 483

Does this manual actually cover full repair, or just tell me what is broken?

Full repair. Unlike a diagnosis-only book, every major section runs component location, theory of operation, diagnostics, tests and adjustments, and then complete disassembly and rebuild. That means engine internals with torque values (FD731V head bolts 32 N.m new or 25 N.m reused, flywheel 56 N.m), the hydrostatic transaxle down to the charge pump, final drive and axle, and the power steering including the cylinder, hoses and a performance test. Attachments coverage handles the mower decks, their drive and the lift linkage adjustment. p. 182
