John Deere 5075G-5100G Common Problems This Manual Covers

Engine cranks but loses power under load, or surges and stalls - classic low fuel pressure behavior.

Section 30 walks the fuel system from tank to injection: check for a restricted fuel line, test the fuel transfer pump output, and replace a clogged fuel filter before condemning anything expensive. The pressure test procedure tells you which stage is starving the engine.

Manual Section: Fuel And Air Intake Systems (Section 30) p. 158
Coolant disappearing with no external leak, white exhaust, or milky oil - coolant getting into the combustion chamber.

Section 20 covers cylinder head removal, gasket replacement and head inspection for cracks and warpage on the 4045 engine. Catch it early and it is a head gasket job; run it long and you are into a cracked head or washed bearings. The section gives the full inspection sequence.

Manual Section: Engine (Section 20) p. 95
Hydraulic valve leaking externally or a function that will not cycle - loader hangs, remote will not move.

Section 70 covers hydraulic valve disassembly, seal replacement and pressure testing. Contaminated fluid and worn seals cause most of it, so the section also gives you the flow and pressure checks to confirm the pump is healthy before you split the valve stack.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System (Section 70) p. 728
Steering feels heavy or slow at idle, or wanders under load on the loader models.

Section 60 covers the hydrostatic steering circuit end to end. The book specifies steering pump flow at 24.6 L/min at rated engine speed, so you can flow test the pump against a real number instead of guessing, then work through the steering valve and cylinder checks.

Manual Section: Steering And Brake Systems (Section 60) p. 632

Frequently Asked Questions

My tractor is a 5085GF orchard model, not a plain 5085G. Is it actually covered?

Yes. The manual's own model list is wider than the title suggests. It covers 5080G, 5090G and 5090GH, plus the GL low profile (5075GL, 5085GL), GF orchard (5075GF, 5085GF, 5100GF), GN narrow (5075GN, 5085GN, 5100GN) and GV vineyard (5075GV, 5085GV) variants. The specialty machines share the same engine, transmission and hydraulic architecture, and where a variant differs the manual calls it out. p. 27

Which engine does my model have, and are the specs really different between them?

All three power classes use the same 4.53 L four cylinder block with a 106.5 mm bore and 127 mm stroke, rated at 2300 rpm. But the tune is different per model: the 5080 runs the 4045HAT80 at 60 kW (80 hp) with 325 Nm of torque at 1600 rpm, the 5090 the 4045HAT81 at 67 kW (90 hp) and 365 Nm, and the 5100 the 4045HAT82 at 74 kW (100 hp) and 375 Nm. Section 20 gives the rebuild specs, and valve lash is the same across the board: 0.36 mm intake, 0.46 mm exhaust. p. 27

The engine will not crank at all. Does the manual walk me through finding out why?

Yes, and this is where you start before buying a starter. Section 40 covers the electrical system with wiring diagrams and step by step diagnosis: check battery condition and connections first, since corroded or loose terminals cause most no-crank calls, then test the starter solenoid and starter motor in order. Following the sequence keeps you from replacing a $400 starter when the fault was a $2 ground strap. p. 27

Does it cover the Power Reverser transmission, or just the plain mechanical box?

Both, in separate sections. Section 50B handles the mechanical transmissions, Section 50C is dedicated to the 24-12 Power Reverser with its own disassembly, clutch pack and control diagnosis, and Section 50A covers the rest of the drive train - final drives, differential, PTO. Whichever gearbox your tractor left the factory with, the teardown procedure for it is in here. p. 27

What routine service specs are in here - idle speeds, oil capacities, PTO speed?

The numbers you actually set a tractor by: slow idle 850-900 rpm, fast idle 2425-2475 rpm, rated speed 2300 rpm, and 1938 engine rpm for 540 on the rear PTO. Engine oil capacity with filter is 8.0 L, and transmission/hydraulic capacity on a 2WD is 36 L. Section 10 collects the general specs, and each system section repeats the figures you need while you are in there.
