John Deere 54D–72D Mower Decks and Attachments Common Problems This Manual Covers
John Deere 54D deck vibrates hard and squeals at full PTO speed, throws belts
Pull the belt guard and spin each spindle by hand. Any grinding or sideways play means the bearings are finished. Rebuild or replace the spindle, then torque the spindle mounting lock nuts to 30 N•m (22 lb-ft) per page 33 and set the flanged nut to 255 N•m (188 lb-ft) before the belt goes back on.

Check belt routing against the drive belt diagrams in the Rotary Mowers section starting on page 19, then check the idler arm spring for stretch or a seized pivot. Replace a glazed or cracked belt. Sharpen blades back to the 0.40 mm (0.016 in.) cutting edge shown on page 40 so you can finish the field in one pass.

Set the tractor on a level shop floor with tires aired to spec, then measure blade tip height front and rear on both sides. Adjust the lift linkage and gauge wheels until both sides match, then retorque the blade bolts on 54D and 62D decks to 68 N•m (50 lb-ft) using page 39 before heading back out.

Clean packed clippings off every spindle housing once the deck cools, and grease the fittings. Pull the hot spindle and inspect the bearings and seals. On reassembly, press the seal face 2.57 mm (0.10 in.) below the lower end of the housing as page 33 calls out, then tighten the spindle nut to 163 N•m (120 lb-ft).

Drain the gear case, inspect the drain plug magnet for metal, and check the seals before topping off. Refill a 54D case to 135 mL (4.5 oz) using the capacity table on page 21. If the gears are chipped, rebuild the case with the procedures starting on page 24 before the grass gets ahead of you.
