John Deere JD760 Common Problems This Manual Covers

John Deere JD760 engine cranks slowly or won't start at all in cold weather

Test the batteries first: four 6-volt, 115 ampere-hour units connected in series, so one weak cell drags down the whole string. Clean and tighten the ground connections. Bench-test the starter against the specs on page 237: minimum locked torque of 22 ft-lbs at 4 volts and 400 amps. Replace brushes worn to 3/8 inch.

Manual Section: Electrical System p. 237
Hydraulic functions slow and jerky, pump squeals under load, system pressure won't hold

Hook a gauge to the system and check it against the 2250 psi maximum on page 20. A squeal points to a suction-side air leak, so tighten the inlet fittings and check reservoir oil level. If pressure stays low, turn the stroke control valve adjusting screw until the gauge reads 2250 to 2300 psi, per page 298.

Manual Section: Hydraulic Pumps p. 298
Engine overheats at full throttle, coolant temperature climbs fast, radiator boils over

Check coolant level and belt tension first, then clean chaff and debris out of the radiator fins. If the water pump is suspect, pull it and measure impeller-to-housing clearance: 0.015 to 0.035 inch, per page 122. Press a new impeller to that same clearance and torque the fan cap screws to 35 ft-lbs.

Manual Section: Cooling System p. 122
Engine down on power, black smoke under load, air cleaner plugged with field dust

Remove the dry element and empty the dust cup; have the operator dump it every 200 hours. Blow the element clean from the inside out with compressed air under 100 psi, per page 142, or rinse it with water at no more than 40 psi and dry it below 180°F before reinstalling.

Manual Section: Diesel Fuel System p. 142
Clutch slips under a heavy pull, engagement chatters, transmission gets hard to shift

Check transmission oil level and condition before tearing anything down. Drain and refill every 1200 hours per the schedule on page 38, replace the filter elements, and torque the filter covers to 50 ± 5 ft-lbs as shown on page 273. If slipping continues with fresh oil, inspect the clutch control valve and clutch pack for wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the torque specifications for the cylinder head cap screws?

The cylinder head cap screws should be tightened to 180 ft-lbs when using 'F' grade screws. This procedure is detailed in the engine cap screw torques table. p. 24

How do I troubleshoot starting problems on a John Deere JD760?

If the starter operates sluggishly, check for a low battery, high resistance in the circuit, excessive engine drag, or starter drag. If the starter does not operate, connect a voltmeter to the solenoid control terminals; if battery voltage is present while depressing the starter switch, the starter is defective. p. 224

What are the valve clearance specifications for the engine?

The intake valve clearance is 0.018 inch and the exhaust valve clearance is 0.028 inch. These clearances apply whether the engine is hot or cold. p. 54

What is the recommended service interval for changing the engine oil and filter?

The engine oil and filter should be drained and filled every 100 hours of operation. The crankcase capacity is 19 U.S. quarts. p. 37

How do I adjust the alternator belt tension?

The alternator belts should be adjusted to allow 1-inch deflection with 20 pounds of force applied midway between the alternator and crankshaft pulleys. To adjust, loosen the adjusting cap screw and mounting bolt nuts, then pull outward on the front alternator frame. p. 59

Do I get instant access to this John Deere JD760 Service Manual?
