Part of the John Deere Repair Manuals.
TM-1164 is the factory technical manual John Deere Dubuque Works wrote for the JD850 crawler dozer. It gives the factory capacities, torques, clearances and hydrostatic pressures for the 6619T turbo diesel and the dual-path hydrostatic drive.
It covers track chains, rollers and recoil springs, then final drives, the transfer drive, parking brakes, the 24 volt electrical system and the blade hydraulics. The system testing groups cover operational checkout and hydrostatic pressure tests. They also hold the electrical schematic, the wiring diagram and the hydraulic schematics.
A made-up figure on this machine costs real money. A guessed shoe bolt torque lets shoes work loose, and a guessed relief setting puts the hydrostatic pumps and motors at risk. Print the sections you need and let those pages get greasy on the bench.

John Deere JD850 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Engine will not start or starts hard
Start with fuel: an empty tank, the wrong fuel, water, air or dirt in the fuel, clogged lines, a suction-side air leak, a restricted filter or a failed transfer pump. Then check for restricted air intake, a faulty injection pump, faulty nozzles or a faulty electric shut-off. On the electrical side, look for corroded or loose battery cables, a weak or dead battery, and cranking speed that is too slow.
Manual Section: System Testing - Engine - Diagnosing Malfunctions - Engine Will Not Start or Starting Hard p. 841Engine overheats
Start with the simple causes: low coolant, a dirty or plugged radiator, a loose or broken fan belt, a bad radiator pressure cap and a low crankcase oil level. Next come the thermostat, water pump, air in the coolant, a limed-up system, a defective head gasket, incorrect timing and engine overload. Fuel causes are improper fuel, excessive fuel delivery and improper injection pump timing.
Manual Section: System Testing - Engine - Diagnosing Malfunctions - Engine Overheats p. 843Starting motor will not rotate and engine will not turn
Check for burnt or bad solenoid switch contacts and for pull-in or hold-in windings that are open, shorted or grounded. Then look at worn brushes, a burnt commutator, high mica, weak brush spring tension and open or grounded field or armature windings. If the motor spins but will not turn the engine, inspect the sprag clutch drive, the drive lever and the pivot bolt.
Manual Section: System Testing - Electrical System - Diagnosing Failures - Starting Motor Will Not Rotate p. 860Disconnect clutch slips
Inspect the clutch disk for wear or burning and for oil or grease on it. Check that the disk is installed correctly. If the disk is good, adjust the clutch linkage, because a linkage out of adjustment also makes the clutch slip.

What are the fluid capacities of the John Deere JD850 crawler bulldozer?
The cooling system holds 9 gal. (34.0 L) and the fuel tank holds 82 gal. (310.4 L). The crankcase takes 32 qt. (30.3 L), or 34 qt. (32.2 L) including the filter. The splitter drive takes 1.5 gal. (5.7 L). Each final drive has an inner compartment of 5.5 gal. (20.8 L) and an outer compartment of 3.5 gal. (13.2 L). The hydrostatic drives hold 40 gal. (151.4 L) and the hydraulic system holds 35 gal. (132.5 L). Low ground pressure crawlers have their own capacity figures in the manual. p. 36
How do I adjust track tension on the JD850?
Measure sag between the front carrier roller and the front idler, with a pin and bushing centered over the front carrier roller. Sealed track should sag 1 to 1-1/2 in. Lubricated track should sag 1-1/2 to 2 in. (38 to 51 mm). To tighten, pump grease into the track adjuster fitting. To loosen, turn the check valve 1 to 3 turns counterclockwise and let grease escape through the vent hole. Use a grease gun of no more than 8000 psi. The adjuster cylinder can hold high pressure, so never look into the check valve. p. 1064
What is the valve clearance on the JD850 engine and how is it set?
Intake is 0.015 ± 0.002 in. (0.38 ± 0.05 mm) and exhaust is 0.025 ± 0.002 in. (0.64 ± 0.05 mm), with the engine hot or cold. Use the JDE81 engine rotation tool and timing pin. With No. 1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke, adjust exhaust valves 1, 3, 5 and intake valves 1, 2, 4. Rotate the flywheel 360 degrees to No. 6 TDC compression and adjust the remaining valves. p. 525
What are the track shoe bolt and sprocket cap screw torques on the JD850?
Torque regular lubricated track shoe bolts to 220 lb-ft (301 N·m), then turn each bolt an additional 120 degrees. Torque master shoe bolts to 220 ± 22 lb-ft (301 ± 30 N·m) in a cross pattern. Then turn them an additional 180 degrees for standard shoes or 270 degrees for swamp shoes. Sprocket cap screws take 300 lb-ft (407 N·m) for D-grade and 425 lb-ft (576 N·m) for F-grade. p. 171
What is the hydrostatic charge pressure on the JD850?
Procedure 9 is run at fast idle. Neutral charge pressure should read 260 to 340 psi (1793 to 2344 kPa) (18 to 23 bar). Operating charge pressure should read 180 to 240 psi (12 to 17 bar). The high pressure relief valve on the 850 and 855 is set to 6300 to 6700 psi (434 to 461 bar), with oil at 135 to 160 F. p. 941
