This is the factory repair manual for the John Deere 6140R, 6150R, 6150RH, 6170R, 6190R, 6210R, and 6210RE tractors - the actual teardown and reassembly book, not the operator's guide. It covers engine removal and installation, the exhaust cleaning system, all three transmission families (AutoPowr/IVT, PowrQuad, DirectDrive), MFWD, differential and final drives, front and rear PTO, hydrostatic steering, rear brakes and the trailer brake valve, the full hydraulic system from charge pump to SCVs and both hitches, suspended front axle, cab suspension, air conditioning, and the special tools you will need to fabricate or order. Torque values and capacities are in the General Information section. One honest note: diagnostic trouble codes live in the separate Diagnostics Manual, not here.

John Deere 6140R to 6210RE Common Problems This Manual Covers

Hydraulic control block leaks or has been disturbed, and the pressure line screws need retorquing without warping the block.

The Hydraulic System section gives the two-stage sequence for the system pressure line hex socket screws: 10 N·m once crosswise as a preliminary pass, then 60 ± 6 N·m twice crosswise for final. Skipping the staged crosswise pattern is how blocks get distorted and leak again.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System - Priority Control Blocks p. 1471
Freshly rebuilt engine and no idea when to do the first oil change during break-in.

The Engine section covers removal and installation of components, and the break-in schedule calls for the first oil change between 100 and a maximum of 250 hours on a new or rebuilt engine. Run it too long on break-in oil and you throw away the rebuild.

Manual Section: Engine - Removal and Installation of Components p. 65
Coolant drain plug either weeps after a cooling system repair or gets snapped off by an overeager wrench.

The Cooling System section specifies just 4 to 5 N·m (3 to 3.7 lb-ft) on the coolant drain plug. That is finger-tight plus a nudge. The section walks through cooling system service so you drain, refill, and seal it without stripping anything.

Manual Section: Fuel, Air-Intake, Cooling, and Exhaust - Cooling System p. 37
MFWD front axle or final drives making noise, or the front driveshaft U-joints and torsion dampers are worn out.

The Drive Train section covers U.J. shafts, torsion dampers, mechanical front-wheel drive, differential, and final drives with full removal and installation procedures, so you can open the axle knowing the disassembly order instead of discovering it with a pry bar.

Manual Section: Section 50A - Drive Train (without Transmission), Group 15: Mechanical Front-Wheel Drive p. 309

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the hydraulic system operating pressure on these 6R tractors?

Maximum system pressure is 20000 kPa, which is 200 bar or 2900 psi. The manual gives the pressure specs alongside the repair procedures for the charge pump, hydraulic pump, and priority control blocks, so you know what you are testing against after a rebuild. p. 55

How much transmission/hydraulic oil do these tractors take after a repair?

Depends on the transmission. PowrQuad machines take 56 L (14.8 US gal.) of transmission/hydraulic oil, AutoPowr/IVT machines take 66 L (17.4 US gal.). That matters when you have just split the tractor or dropped a shift unit and need to refill from dry. Fuel tanks run 355 L on the 6140R and 6150R, and either 405 L or 465 L on the 6170R through 6210R. p. 55

Does this manual cover diagnostic trouble codes and fault codes?

No, and I would rather tell you straight than sell you the wrong book. This is the repair manual - mechanical and hydraulic teardown, removal and installation, torque specs. Wherever a fault code comes up, it cross-references the corresponding Diagnostics Manual, which is a separate publication. This book does cover ECU removal and installation and terminating resistors, but not code reading or testing procedures.

Which transmissions does it cover? Mine has the IVT.

All three fitted to this series: AutoPowr/IVT, PowrQuad, and DirectDrive, each with its own repair section including shift units. The IVT section is the one most owners end up needing, since that transmission is not something you want to open up guessing.

How strong is the 6210R, and does the manual give real engine numbers?

The General Information section lists full specs. For the 6210R: 154 kW (210 PS) at 1900 rpm standard, rising to 177 kW (240 PS) at 2000 rpm with Intelligent Power Management, and 983 N·m (725 lb-ft) of torque at 1600 rpm in standard trim. PTO power output, capacities, and torque values for the whole model range are in the same section. p. 53
