This is the factory repair manual for the John Deere 7185J, 7195J, 7205J, 7210J and 7225J tractors, 2011 to 2014. It covers teardown and rebuild of the whole machine: the 6.8 L six-cylinder diesel with its Denso HP3 common rail pump, the 16F/16R PowrQuad-Plus transmission and range box, MFWD clutch, rear differential, final drives, PTO and wet disk brakes, hydrostatic steering, the hydraulic and charge pumps, selective control valves and 3-point hitch. You also get torque value charts, connector repair and harness routing for the electrical side, cab HVAC and air seat service, and drawings for dealer fabricated tools. One honest note: trouble code diagnostics live in the separate Diagnostic Technical Manual. This book is the wrench work.

John Deere 7185J-7225J Common Problems This Manual Covers

Harsh, delayed or slipping shifts in the PowrQuad-Plus

Start with fluid level and condition, then work through the shifting mechanisms before condemning clutch packs. The PowrQuad-Plus Transmission section covers the shift linkage, the electro-hydraulic engagement components, and full module removal and teardown with clutch pack inspection specs when it does come apart.

Manual Section: PowrQuad-Plus Transmission p. 277
MFWD will not engage or slips under load

Usually the MFWD clutch pack or its engagement circuit. The MFWD Drive Systems section walks through component removal and installation and the MFWD clutch teardown, so you can measure plate wear and rebuild the clutch instead of guessing and swapping parts blind.

Manual Section: MFWD Drive Systems p. 449
Weak 3-point hitch lift or slow selective control valves

The Hydraulics section covers the hydraulic pump and charge pump, system valves, SCVs and the rear hitch, with real assembly torques like 50 N·m on the hitch valve mounting cap screws. Rated lift is 4600 kg at 610 mm, so verify against that before tearing into the pump.

Manual Section: Hydraulics p. 685
Engine running hot under heavy pull

The Engine Cooling System chapter in the Fuel, Air Intake and Cooling Systems section covers the full circuit on the 6.8L. It gives removal and installation for the cooling components, and the same section handles the air intake side, since a choked charge air cooler shows up as heat too.

Manual Section: Fuel, Air Intake and Cooling Systems p. 99

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this manual cover fault codes and ECU diagnostics?

No, and that is by design. This is the repair manual: removal, teardown, rebuild and installation. Trouble codes and controller diagnostics for these same J-series models ship in a separate companion Diagnostic Technical Manual. If your problem starts with a code on the monitor, you want that book first, then this one to do the actual repair it points you to.

Will this get me through a PowrQuad-Plus rebuild?

Yes. There is a dedicated section for the 16F/16R PowrQuad-Plus with component removal and installation, the shifting mechanisms, the PQ+ module itself and the range box. Since engagement is electro-hydraulic, plan on clean fluid and careful clutch pack measurement during assembly. It is a big job, but the procedures are laid out step by step. p. 277

Are there full wiring schematics with wire numbers?

Straight answer: no. The Electrical section gives you connector repair procedures, physical wiring harness routing diagrams showing where each harness runs, plus coverage of the charging circuit, starting circuit, solenoids, switches and the monitoring system. That is enough to chase a chafed harness or rebuild a corroded connector, but it is not a numbered circuit schematic book. p. 197

Does the fuel section cover the Denso HP3 common rail pump?

Yes. These tractors run the DE10 / Denso HP3 high pressure common rail system on the 6.8L, and the Diesel Fuel System chapter covers its service along with the controls, air intake, cooling and exhaust. Common rail work punishes sloppiness, so follow the cleanliness procedures exactly. Injection pump internals beyond what the book shows belong to a fuel shop. p. 58

Do I need special tools for the bigger jobs?

Some, yes. The Dealer Tools section lists the essential and recommended tooling by procedure, and includes dealer fabricated tool drawings so a decent machine shop can make the one-off pullers and fixtures instead of you buying them. For splitting the tractor or setting up the differential, check that section before you schedule the job. p. 896
